I actually like to base set designs but could not really care about the portraits.

doesn't really matter what the designs look like. Upper deck has the exclusive and everyone will want a Matthews Rookie. They can charge $160 a box if they want and they'll still sell out.
Exclusive license = license to stop giving a crap about set design or value.
Collectors are slaves to the hobby, and will buy anything for any price if it is all that is available, and Upper Deck has figured that out.Last edited by adamslogik; 07-13-2016 at 12:15 AM.

I think the design is uninspiring too (I did like this year's UD Series 1 & 2 designs), but at $16 a box, I and a whole lot of other people would be buying cases

I thought exactly the same about the base design (and I like the acetate parallel), but I find the portrait very uninspiring.

Not crazy about the designs, especially the blue on the Canvas YG's.
Can't wait for the E-pack release and I can pick cards up for pennies though, that should be fun and will definitely beat buying any over priced boxes. I wonder if the big time case breakers are going to change any habits with the whole e-pack thing and seeing what it did to this years S1 singles.

Why would the NHLPA want to "bring back" a company that has no interest in making hockey cards?Habs fan and collector! Main PC's: Carey Price, Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, and of course...

2016-17 Upper Deck License to Shill: Coming to an LCS near you!
RGM81 Stop being so literal and stop being so Pro-UD. It's getting tiresome.
Bring back Topps, bring back Pacific, Bring back ITG. Just bring back SOMEONE that wants to produce hockey cards instead of the same crap company with a printing press just copying money and selling it back to the people.

@Cunnuc What a bizarre thing to say. Why would I stop being pro-something I like? Should I stop being pro-Montreal Canadiens/Carey Price/Luke Skywalker because you don't like them as much as I do? The very premise of our hobby is "collect what you like" is it not? That's what I do and that's what I promote.
Topps has not even put in a bid the last three times the hockey license came up for negotiation; they're out of the game not because of an exclusive, but because they choose to be out of the game.
Now, let's get back to talking about the flagship instead of trying to tell people that their upbeat attitude about something they enjoy is "tiresome."
