Nine Chargers named to AFC Pro Bowl team

Here is the overall Pro Bowl results.

Tomlinson's backfield partner - veteran fullback Lorenzo Neal - was also selected as a starter for his second Pro Bowl berth.

Linebacker Shawne Merriman, who was suspended four games this season for violating the league's steroids policy, tight end Antonio Gates and defensive tackle Jamal Williams were the other starters named from the Chargers.

Merriman recorded 12 1/2 sacks to earn his second Pro Bowl selection in as many seasons.

Quarterback Philip Rivers and center Nick Hardwick were named as reserves and kicker Nate Kaeding and special teamer Kassim Osgood were the other Chargers named to the Pro Bowl.

Superstar quarterback Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts was named to the AFC team for the seventh time. Manning leads the AFC in passing yards (3,910) and touchdown passes (26).

Center Jeff Saturday of Indianapolis was also named as a starter. Three other members of the AFC South champion Colts - wide receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne and tackle Tarik Glenn - were named as reserves. It was the eighth Pro Bowl selection for Harrison and the first for Wayne.

The Baltimore Ravens, who won the AFC North, also placed five players. Tackle Jonathan Ogden, who received his 10th Pro Bowl selection, safety Ed Reed and linebacker Adalius Thomas were named as starters. Defensive end Terrell Suggs and cornerback Chris McAlister were selected as reserves.

Chad Johnson of the Cincinnati Bengals and Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans were named as the starting receivers. Chad leads the NFL in receiving yards (1,284) and Andre tops the NFL in catches with 97.

Guard Will Shields of the Kansas City Chiefs will make his 12th straight Pro Bowl appearance, passing Reggie White, Junior Seau and Rod Woodson for the second most in league history.

Tackle Willie Anderson of the Bengals and guard Alan Faneca of the Pittsburgh Steelers were also elected as starters on the offensive line.

Cornerback Champ Bailey of the Denver Broncos earned his seventh Pro Bowl selection. Named as a starter, Bailey has eight interceptions this season.

Defensive end Jason Taylor of the Miami Dolphins and defensive tackle Richard Seymour of the New England Patriots were honored for the fifth time. Taylor leads the league with nine forced fumbles.

Defensive end Aaron Schobel of the Buffalo Bills and cornerback Rashean Mathis of the Jacksonville Jaguars were named as starters for the first time.

"It's great to see that all of my hard work has paid off with this honor," Mathis said. "I've been in the league four years and this is such a tremendous honor."

Safety Troy Polamalu of the Steelers was named to the Pro Bowl for the third time in his four seasons and linebacker Al Wilson of the Broncos was selected for the fifth time.

Linebacker Zach Thomas of the Dolphins and safety John Lynch of the Broncos were selected as reserves for their eighth Pro Bowl selections.

Larry Johnson of the Chiefs and Willie Parker of the Steelers were named as the backup running backs behind Tomlinson. It was the second Pro Bowl selection for Larry Johnson and the first for Parker.

Quarterback Carson Palmer of the Bengals was named as a Pro Bowler for the second time.

Tight end Tony Gonzalez and guard Brian Waters of the Chiefs were named as reserves along with defensive end Derrick Burgess of the Oakland Raiders and defensive tackle Casey Hampton of the Steelers.

The Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans did not have any Pro Bowl representatives.
Three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady of the Patriots and Cleveland's Kellen Winslow Jr., who leads all NFL tight ends with 76 catches, did not get selected.

I don't agree with so many Chargers being put onto the Pro Bowl squad. Sure, they are the best team in the AFC, but 9 is more than the Bears got(who I think is the best team in the league). My main problem with the selections is Sean Merriman. Yes, he's a phenominal player, but as you mentioned before he was suspended for 4 games in the season. To me, for someone to have been suspended for steroids, they shouldn't be able to partcipate in the Pro Bowl. It seems like he's being rewarded for breaking the rules. I know the new comissioner is trying to make nice around the league, but how nice is too nice?

No Asante Samuel. Shame. He leads the league in interceptions. Hopefully the Pats will be able to keep him, but the price might be too high.

To me, for someone to have been suspended for steroids

100% not true. He was suspended for an over the counter exercise supplement that is legal, just not in the NFL. The NFL is very strict on supplements! He has never taken steroids!

I also disagree that Chicago is the best team. They got killed against Miami, almost lost to Tampa (gave up like 24 points in on quarter to a rookie QB) and their QB is very erratic. The Chargers are bar far the most consistent team in the NFL. Additionally, the Chargers play in the AFC, which is by far the better division (Patriots, Colts, Steelers, Ravens, Chargers, Bengals, Jacksonville, Miami). Compare that to the best teams in the NFC (Chicago, Saints, Dallas and Seattle). There is a HUGE difference between the divisions.

Now let's move on the stats.

The Chargers have the 5th best offense in the NFL and Chicago is ranked 15th. Chicago has the 5th best defense and the Chargers are 7th. There is little difference between the defenses and a major difference between the offenses, thus the reason the Chargers have 2 more players than Chicago.

Chicago plays teams like Green Bay, Minnesota, and Detroit twice each! The Chargers have to play Denver and KC twice a year! San Diego's losses were both by 3 points to KC and Baltimore and Chicago just squeaked by Arizona and the Bucs. If the Bears were in the AFC they would likey have 4-6 losses.

    Just my opinion!

The Merriman suspension was for steroids and not supplements.

Wow! I stand corrected! I remembered when it happened and the news reported over the counter. Well, in that case I would say 8 Chargers should be going to the Pro Bowl, not 9! I still stand by my "Chargers are much better than the Bears," stance.

How can you say h is "rewarded" for being suspended? The guy was in the top 10 in sacks before the suspension, fell no worse than 11th during the suspension, and took over the top spot two games after the suspension. The guy leads all linebackers in sacks which puts him in the pro bowl without question. Answer me this, did these guys make the pro bowl in their career? They may have not used steroids but did use illegal drugs or commited crimes?

    Michael Irvin
    Lawrence Taylor
    Ray Lewis
    Jamal Lewis

I'm tired of the bias when one guy makes a foolish mistake and gets ripped in the headlines. The guy has taken tests after the initial test and has not tested dirty since. SO tel me smart guy, how does that justify his not geting in? Additionally, he tested positive before the season started (August 2nd to be exact).

People who say they don't deserve that many in makes me sick. The Chargers had a couple of guys not get in and rightfully deserved to (Marcus McNeill, Shaun Phillips). Stop with the bias and get real. The Chargers deserve to have that many because let me remind you, it wasn't too long ago that the Eagles had this many players in and had a comparible record at this point in the season. Bias bias bias is all it is.

It was performance enhancing drugs, not steroids. They can not say that it was or was not. That was the initial report and they don't know what it was. As stated before, he has tested clean after the initial test which tel sme it was a mistake and not a steroid problem.

Sorry, but are you trying to make me feel sorry for you? You have the best team in the AFC and yet you're complaining. People who ***** and moan when there team if having a phenominal season make me sick. You know what I think? That you need to be happy that your team is going to go far in the playoffs, and stop trying to make me feel as if the Chargers got shafted in the Pro Bowl. "Get real".
