Today in Nascar History February 1st:
Winners on this date: Lee Petty and Richard Petty.
February 1st, 1903: The first annual Daytona Beach Speed Tournament is held on Ormond Beach. Alexander Winton sets the mark at 68.19 mph (a huge speed for 1903).
February 1st, 1953: Lee Petty wins the Grand National opener in West Palm Beach. He and 2nd place finisher Jimmie Lewallen each drive Dodge Diplomats prepared by Petty Motorsports.
February 1st, 1959: The brand new Daytona International Speedway opens for practice. Cars run at speed on the track despite the guardrail not being complete in the corners!!!
February 1st, 1969: Richard Petty takes the season opener at Riverside, winning by over 25 seconds. It is Petty's first start in a Ford.

Winners on this date: Harold Kite.
February 5th, 1950: Harold Kite wins the 200 mile race on the Daytona Beach Road Course in a Lincoln. It is his first career start. He beats Red Byron by over 50 seconds in the caution free event.
February 5th, 1995: Nascar debuts its new series, the Craftsman Truck Series, with an 80 lap race at Phoenix. Mike Skinner takes the inaugural win driving a black #3 truck backed by Richard Childress.

Winners on this date: Herb Thomas.
February 6th, 1952: Nascar holds its annual victory dinner in Daytona Beach. Herb Thomas wins 2264.50 in prize money for being champion in 1951.
February 6th, 2010: Kevin Harvick wins the Bud Shootout for the 2nd straight year, joining only 3 other drivers as repeat winners of the event.

February 8th, 1976: The 3 fastest qualifiers times' for the Daytona 500 are disallowed by Nascar after illegal parts are found on all of them. This gives the pole to relative unknown driver Ramo Stott.
February 8th, 2013: The 4th class of the Nascar Hall of Fame is officially inducted: Leonard Wood, Buck Baker, Herb Thomas, Cotton Owens, and Rusty Wallace.

Winners on this date: Nobody.
February 9th, 1952: A two way radio is first used in Nascar competition in the 100 mile Modified and Sportsman division race at Daytona. Driver Al Stevens is able to talk to crew chief Cotton Bennett while driving and he finishes 27th in the field of 118 cars. Tim Flock crosses the line 1st in the event, but is disqualified for illegal roll bars, giving the win to Jack Smith.
