PSA or Beckett Graded ???

Rate this Entry
On a long weekend here in Canada, it isn't a stat holday just one of those 'we need a long weekend' things so I thought I would do some card shopping. I was looking for a Crosby YG RC to put in the store since I don't have one. I could have picked one up a couple of weeks ago for $200 but missed out because I was otherwise occupied.

Anyway, I started looking for one of these cards and I noticed some interesting prices for a couple of graded rookies which started me thinking about the differences between PSA and Beckett. Now I belong to both so I can send cards to either but I have almost always gone with PSA. Both companies have a fairly good reputation for their grading services and on the whole are almost identical in service time and costs. Beckett does offer their subgrades for each card graded which PSA does not and for some I guess that is a plus but in the grand scheme of things a 9 is a 9 and does it really matter how that 9 came to be ? I don't find the subgrades an important feature so by default I use PSA.

I like PSA's monthly graded price guide and the articles it contains and it has a useful purpose as I sell my graded cards using the PSA price guide. This gets me to my question...why does PSA price a graded card differently then Beckett ? Who is the expert on the graded card price list ? I recently sent about 20 hockey cards from 1933-34 O-Pee-Chee and Hamilton Gum for grading. When they returned in their graded outfits I checked prices from PSA and Beckett. Now unfortunately one company doesn't list the prices for the Hamilton Gum cards so I couldn't compare them but both listed the OPC cards so I checked. In total the cards were valued about $400 differently from PSA and Beckett ? How is that ?

Getting to my Crosby YG RC Graded search I found several with varying prices but in the end I checked to see what PSA and Beckett had to say about prices and here is what I found.
Sidney Crosby 2005-06 Upper Deck 201 (RC)
NM-MT 8 PSA $175 BGS NmMt (8): $125
MT 9 PSA $225 BGS Mint (9) $300
GEM MT 10 PSA $430 BGS Pristine (10) $1200

What a difference !!! So who has the lowdown on these prices ? Who do we trust here ? I am thoroughly confused and rather baffled
