Here are a few of the tips that I have found aid in receiving autographs from former players:

1. Always send a self-addressed, stamped envelope. (SASE) This makes it much easier for the person autographing your card to simply drop the letter off in the mail, rather than to have to come up with their own postage.

2. Always send a handwritten letter, never a typed one. This will add an air of authenticity to your request, and will make your request feel more personal. Write it from the heart.

3. When writing your letter, always tell the person you would like an autograph from that you would be honored to receive their autograph. Sound genuine when writing this, though. Don't try to falsify a compliment just to receive an autograph. Honestly tell them how INCREDIBLE it would be to have an autograph from them.

I have not found any ways of receiving or purchasing discounted postage, however. I usually buy a "book" of stamps from the local post office from around ten dollars, give or take a few cents.
To figure out how many letters you can send based off of how many stamps you have, consider this: each letter needs two stamps. One for the SASE, and one for the envelope that you are addressing to the player.
