"The Reason Set Collecting is Better than Player Collecting."

I have some time right now so I think I will post another entry.

In the late 1990's, card collecting went through a drastic change. Many cool innovations occurred such as jersey cards, autos, parrallels, and inserts. While this made collecting more interesting, it had a major side effect. No one could have all of a player's cards anymore. It shifted focus away from the classic collection, a set.

I collect sets, because it is a goal. The enjoyment of getting one card closer is a good experience. I do not recommend it for people without patience. It takes time, but in the end is rewarding. I can not understand why people player collect exclusively.

Although I do have side PC players, they are not my focus. Player collecting is a never ending journey. Each year star players get 100's of new cards. It would be eternally frustrating to me if I focused on players. I would never be able to have all of the cards, so why do it?

I would like other people's thoughts if you would like to comment. Which is better? Set collecting or player collecting?

I have to side with you on this one... set collecting is better from my viewpoint. I miss the good old days.

Sometimes, when I read some of the threads about player collecting, I wonder if they realized that card companies will put up any imaginable parallels variations just for the cash grab. (Whether it's on the bay or from an LCS/distributor.)

Just browsing through here and thought I would drop a line. Though I collect a single player, Ewing, I have to agree with your stance. While sets do not excite me so to say, all these parallels of Ewing in particular is a frustration. IMO though, something new has popped up the past couple years that is making it even harder, creating cardds and serials of these retired guys. Now instead of 1400 or so cards that MAY have been possible to reach, I may have 1600 or more in the near future.

With 1/1, printing plates, etc, I am just going to be happy when I reach the 1000 card status.

    Thanks for posting your blog.
