    New fantasy game for cards!

    Hi all,

I'm starting a new fantasy-format game where you have an opportunity to purchase slots in a draft of 100 autographed and game-used cards from my collection. All 100 cards are autographed or game-used. Since basketball is the only sport in-season, this first round of competition will be fantasy basketball & basketball cards. The game will work as follows:

    1) I put out a list of 100 cards that are part of the game. This list is NOT subject to change... these cards are in my possession, and ALL will be distributed to the participants that buy in. The list of 100 cards is below.

    2) 10 slots are made available for purchase; each slot will be for 10 cards (10 participants * 10 cards each = the 100 cards in step 1). All participants will pay the same price - $35 per slot including shipping. You may purchase up to 2 slots.
    3) A random drawing will occur of all participants that will dictate the order of selecting a player, detailed in step 4 below.
    4) The participant who draws #1 will pick one basketball player for the week-long contest. #2 then gets to pick their player, and so on.
    5) At the end of the week, the participant whose player earned the most fantasy points (FPS per CBS Sportsline) for the week will get the #1 selection in a "draft" of the 100 cards available. The player with the 2nd most points will get pick 2, and so on.
    6) Draft of the 100 cards will continue in a "snake-style" format (the player who came in last / 10th place will get the #11 pick, 9th place gets the #12 pick, and by the time it gets back to the player with the highest points, they will get the final pick of the 2nd round, then the 1st pick of the 3rd round and will continue snaking until all 100 cards are chosen).
    7) to speed up the process of a 100 card draft, I will have all players submit and ordered list of their preferred cards... meaning each person gets the highest card on their list when their turn occurs.
    8) I ship each participant's drafted cards.

For this first run of the game, please respond to this post if you are interested, and if you would like 1 or 2 slots. Once I deem there's enough interest, I will set a date for the game to begin, and I will contact those who indicated their interest on a first-come, first-served basis to officially sign up & pay. PLEASE don't hesitate to respond to this post if you have any questions - I want to clarify any questions you may have on this game! Here's the list of 100 cards that will part of this first contest.

Hi all, I'd be happy to answer any questions if there's any confusion on the game. In a nutshell, you get 10 cards from that list (ALL auto or game-used) regardless of where you place in the game for $35 including shipping. I think there's good value here, several nice cards. I'd also be happy to accept any feedback or concerns, would like to know why folks aren't signing up. I thought this would be a fun game, with good value in cards (better than breaking a box for sure). If I can get enough people to sign up, will run the game for baseball and football as well when they're in season. Thanks for looking, and please let me know if there's anything I can do to alleviate concerns! -Ty

I wanted to give feedback/my thoughts on this...

I am definitely interested in this idea and it would be so much fun! But with all due respect I think a better lot of 100 cards could be had for $350 American (shipping included so maybe $300 is more accurate). I understand the prize lots have to be differentiated for places 1 through 10, as it is a contest, but outside the top 2-3 winners, I couldn't justify spending that much for a lot of 10 of the remaining 70 to choose from that list.

    Jeremy,

Thank you for the feedback, I truly do appreciate it. I do want to be clear that the winner of the fantasy game does NOT receive the top 10 cards on the list. The winner gets the first overall pick (would assume the Lonnie Walker, then #2 gets to choose one card, and so on. By the time it gets to the last place finisher (#10 pick), they would also get the #11 pick (first pick of the 2nd round) due to the snake-draft format. Realistically, the last place finisher would get TWO (#10 pick and #11 pick) of the mega-star game-used or semistar (Reggie Theus, Strickland, Miller) autos.

With regards to your comment that a better lot could be had for $300 USD, I tried to get this lot as close to that figure in value as possible. But I hear you. If this is the concern of others, I would like to hear it! I personally believe that it's VERY close. I'm not looking to "compensate" myself for my time of putting these lots together, running the game and sorting out each player's winnings, and shipping everything, but I also can't afford to take a huge hit on the value, especially with shipping costs. I really want this to be a fun game that we can run weekly while basketball/baseball/football are in season (sorry hockey fans, I just don't collect hockey). I want the value to be as fair as possible. I also feel it's not 100% fair to compare spending $350 on a huge lot (volume-discounted, not all folks can spend that much on one time on cards) to smaller $35 chunks. I absolutely believe that at minimum, the $35 cost on a share of this lot will yield you more value in cards on average than breaking a box, buying card shop singles, or even buying singles online and having them shipped.

There's one other element I didn't discuss in my post, and that's the value of the draft format. You could very easily win the #9 pick, but get the 6th or 7th card on your list if other players choose different cards. This can, and likely will, occur in every round. I believe there's value in YOU getting to choose your own card preferences via your draft list.

All that being said, thank you again for your feedback, it's truly appreciated, and I would welcome it from anyone else as well. Is there something specific I could do in your opinion to improve desirability? In other words, where is the list weak? I'd be perfectly willing to swap out some of the bottom cards on the list for more value in the mid-rounds for example, if that would help.

Finally, a big thank you to scottkoz20 for your support!!

My apologies, somehow I missed the snake draft format and I really like that aspect of it. It makes this even better imo. To get a 100 card lot together in order to do this wouldn't be the easiest thing and would take quite some time, I do understand that. I think some of the cards taken at the end of the draft would be pretty difficult to move, but I do agree with you that for your money it definitely could have more value in buying a box..

Just another note on the cards included in this lot, I noticed pretty much every card is a game used or auto.. I'd be open to some lower end rookies of well known, or up and coming players' cards that are still at low prices but could increase in value as they're careers untold, rather than retired players who were fringe stars/decent players.

Again just giving you my thoughts. I will keep an eye on this to see how it develops and I am definitely interested.

Thanks Jer. I thought about adding rookies and nicer inserts, and I likely will in future versions of the game, but to keep it clean and easy I wanted to stick with "hits only" for this first version. Thank you very much for your interest, and again thank you for the feedback. I'll absolutely let you know how this develops, and will get this going if I can get some more interest. I'd also be willing to cut the list down to 50 and do 5 slots if I can get 3-5 people at one or two slots apiece.

One more point to all, I take card security seriously - every card will be toploaded and the lot team-bagged when shipped.

    Thanks again,
    Ty

My feedback, since you asked....there's about three cards on the list that I'd definitely shell out cash for at a show if the prices was right, and a handful I'd possibly be interested in under the right circumstances. Then, there's a ton that I would never have any interest in. Putting up the fee on the front end doesn't guarantee I get something I want, but DOES guarantee I get a bunch of stuff I don't want.

The $35 is a reasonable fee for the quantity of cards the buyer ends up with, and there are enough good names on the list, but the overwhelming majority of those cards just don't do anything for me personally.

We periodically used to have card drafts on here, where someone ran it, everyone sent in a bunch of cards, and then we drafted and got what we chose at the end. Same situation with ending up with stuff I don't care about, but at least I was moving some of my own stuff I don't care about in the process (with no out-of-pocket cost except postage).

jmintz, that's a completely fair perspective, and I thank you for the feedback. This card list may not appeal to people who are high-end-only collectors. I also considered different versions of this game with high-end only, or a cheaper-priced lower-end version. Ultimately, I had to land on one list; which in this case is moderate price, moderate quality, "hits only". If I can get going, I can absolutely mix up the game each week, with different lists that appeal to different collectors. I'm ultimately going for a fun game of fair value that different people can play each week based on which card lists appeal to them... while knowing that it's impossible to please everyone each week (some folks may be turned off by game where they get only one high-end card, for example).

Very creative and thought-out approach to moving cards that you don't want. It has a lot of potential, but again the value just isn't there at $35/spot. If there were more autos of the 'name' players it might be different. You can do a lot with $35 on eBay these days, that's how I look at it anyway.
