Exact numbers I posted about a week and a half ago on here.
Good to see it finally done. Gives up one year of UFA as well and the number is solid.
Now just need to get the Purcell contract done (arb tomorrow is probably what will happen), and then the team is set until a trade happens I guess. Still could use a tweener 2nd/3rd line forward and/or a 3/4 dman. But overall the team is still just as good as the one that was a goal away from the SCF last year.
Is it October yet?

For that money I'd rather have James Wisniewski. TB overpaid.

Not at all. Almost exact term I expected it to be. He wasnt going to sign a retirement contract and the Lightning wanted to tie him up until at the least UFA years come up, and they managed to sneak an extra year in there.
At the end of this contract, Marty St Louis will be retired (more than likely unless hes playing when he is 42 which is very possible), VL4 will be on the back end of his massive deal which will be paying him very little in real money, Ohlunds contract will be gone (if he doesnt retire before than), Malones contract will be gone, and Stamkos will be ready to take over as the main guy in the franchise and THEN he will get the retirement contract.
Makes perfect sense to me. And Im happy Yzerman got him locked up like he did for under 8M.

Not 100% sure about the other guys deals - but if getting Malone gone, St. Louis near (or into) retirment, and more of VL4 off the books - why not sign him for 3??
5 years only eats up one of his UFA years, that's why I'm surprised they did't push for longer.
7 years would get them 3 UFA years, and isn't exactly a retirment contract - he'd only be 28.
If you keep it to 3, then he's still only 24, and played 6 seasons - and would be an RFA again when the contract is up..... when 5-7 years would make lots of sense.
Unless I'm missing something?? Is 7 years in the leauge not the trigger for UFA status?

Yeah it is. But the 5 years allows all of the big money and long term contracts currently on the books to be either completely gone, or the real dollar amounts are insanely low. So when the new contract is ready to be done, Stamkos will be the "main guy" to be paid so he can have his 10+ year 100+M deal then.
This allows the Lightning to have cap flexibility now and then they can return to it when more of Yzermans contracts are on the book than Lawtons.
I see what youre saying, but this allows Stamkos to get paid as the big guy sooner (as opposed to making it a 7 year deal), and it allows the Lightning to wait for those other contracts to be done or about done to give him the money.
