Going way back for Game Used?

I read alot of posts where people don't like card companies using old materials for game used cards. The best example I can think of is how many Joe Thornton cards used Boston Bruins swatches many years after Joe had moved to San Jose.

With that it mind, here is another example I came across. An Eric Lindros Superlative Famous Fabrics stick card (#'d to 9)

The piece shows "UP" from the shaft of the stick. Which made me wonder. "When was the last time Eric Lindros used a Bauer Supreme stick?" The most recent card I could find with Lindros using a Bauer Supreme stick with white lettering was 94-95 Pinnacle. After that they changed the lettering to black with a gold background. Beyond 2001 Lindros used a Bauer Tri-Flex, Vapor, or Total-90 stick.

Which brings me to my question: Does an older piece of memorabilia have more value to you because it IS older?

For a stick piece, a goalie equipment piece, a fight strap, or anything non-jersey I couldn't really care either way because the year of use is not that obvious. If I like a player, I don't care if a stick swatch, or pad is from San Jose, or Carolina, or Vancouver, or what not.

On the other hand, for a jersey, one of the things that I hate is getting a card of a player wearing team Z's uniform, while the card says that they are currently with team Y, and that the memorabilia is from team X. I have been turned off from buying many cards because of this very issue and to me it does make a difference in value. When I want the red, black, silver, white of the Hurricanes with a Hurricane player's picture and I get the blue of the Blues in memorabilia, that is not acceptable.

Irbe is a different story altogether as all of his jersey memorabilia is only all-star and Hurricanes in origin. One jersey card from the Sharks would be acceptable, as long as it pictures him in all-star gear or in a Sharks uniform. Stock photos are easy to find for any of the companies...use them and match them to the swatch.

I'm with y'all on that, I'd rather have generic white than a mis-matched jersey piece and pic.

I agree completely - I collect Al MacInnis, and his career was split between the Flames and the Blues...mem. cards that don't match up with the photo on the card are waaay worse than the dreaded solid white swatch. I mean, a blue swatch on a Flames card? Really?
As for the older peices, I like the old Calgary Flames patch swatches that UD uses for MacInnis...they look like they were used over and over again as the stitching is quite often frayed. I find this "game used" look a little more authentic and a refreshing change from the brand new "single period used" peices.

Yes, I think older jerseys are cool but I definitely prefer the jersey to match the card. When I see a Howe card with him in his Whalers jersey and a big red swatch it just doesn't do it for me.

i voted I dont care....but I also dont collect game used cards at all.

Hey, speaking of way back, remember when finding a jersey or stick or auto (other than BAP) in a pack used to be HUGE?? When they used to be "worth" something?? Back in 2001 & 2002 I could never afford them, or full boxes for that matter, I used to buy blaster packs at the 7-11, for $3.99 I got a pack of 98/99 Black Diamond, 99/00 MVP and 99/00 Gold Reserve. I probably bought 50 or more of those things over the months, and one day I pulled a Steve Yzerman auto from a Gold Reserve pack. I still have that card.

Now? I buy big lots, pick out what I want and flip em again. Hundreds of memorabilia cards and autos. Filling up my house or someone else's house........

i personally like it to match...but i do agree that older pieces are better...with regards to jerseys, i think the company should plan ahead....like don't put a Patrick Roy Montreal piece on a Aves card...just make the card a montreal card

The most eggregious example I can think of is an UD Jersey card I have of Sergei Samsonov. The card has an Edmonton Oilers logo, the picture shows Sergei in a Carolina Hurricanes uniform, and the swatch is from a Boston Bruins jersey.
