Your Dream Team
Hey guys.
I was just thinking in the summer doldrums that are the hockey world, why don't we all put our Dream Teams together. I don't necessarily mean who you think the best players are or which team would win. I mean your Dream Team of your favourites both currently and from when you were a kid. I'm sure guys like Crosby and Gretzky will make the list, which is fine, but I'm also interested in which lesser players you would have in addition to those guys, so post why you pick each player.
C-Joe Sakic - The only upside to Colorado ever winning a Cup is that Sakic deserved it (Bourque too, I guess). I started liking him as a Nordique and when they moved to Colorado I continued to like him despite the team rivalry. I always respected him for staying with the same organization for his entire career. He also has the distinction of being my first non-Canuck favourite.
RW-Trevor Linden - I was 10 in '94 and Trevor Linden was my absolute idol. Before each game in the playoff run I would grab a different Canucks (usually Linden or McLean) card and some paper and trace the picture.
LW-Jannik Hansen - I'm trying to decide whether or not to scrap my current collecting habits and just go after him. He's my favourite Canuck going right now.
D-Garth Butcher - I was young. He was a Canuck and wore #5. I had a thing for #5 back then for some reason. That's all I know.
D-Nicklas Lidstrom - First RC I ever pulled (91-92 Pro-Set). Been a fan of his ever since. Like Sakic, I respect him for staying with one organization his entire career.
G-Ron Tugnutt - It was close and Kirk McLean almost took it, but Tugnutt is my guy. He has the distinction of being the second non-Canuck favourite of mine (apparently I had a soft spot for Quebec back then). I don't remember how old I was but I first noticed Tugnutt in a game against Vancouver. Oddly enough it was a 6-6 tie, but both goalies were making great saves. Then when I was a little older I became a Senators fan and he was conveniently playing for them. One day years later my dad bought me 5 IP Tugnutt autos on Ebay. I still have them.

Would be easy for me to place the likes of Bobby Orr and Gordie Howe in this list, but am going for a mix of who I admire the most now and then.
C - Matt Duchene is one of my favourite centers in the league today. Been following Matt since in his last year in junior and it could have been easy to put Lindros et al in here, but given the chance, I'd have Duchene in my team any day of the week. Great kid with his head screwed on, sound playmaking skills and a nifty scorer, too.
LW - Simon Gagne is my PC guy so no guesses as to why he's in here. Started to really notice him when he scored an OT GWG in Game 6 of the 2004 Playoffs against the Lightning. From then on, he's been by far the player I admire most. I love his attitude and his ability to be used in every situation possible be it on the PP or PK.
RW - Pavel Bure had speed that I had never seen before. Only really knew him as a Panther and very briefly as a Canuck as I started following hockey circa. 1997/98. Mesmerising winger. If he had Fred Astaire's knees, just imagine what he would (not could!) have achieved...
D - Niklas Lidstrom is the guy everybody wants their defenceman to be like. Growing up, I was envy of the Red Wings and what they had in Lidstrom. Still am now.
D - Eric Desjardins was the first D-man that I started noticing who had superb offensive awareness. He was one of the core players who I grew up watching for the Flyers that ultimately became my team.
G - Dominik Hasek was so fustrating to watch. Fustrating in the sense that I can remember how flexible he was and how you couldn't get past him. I used to have a picture of Hasek on the front of one of my science school books.

Oh the 1996 World Cup of Hockey USA squad, even being Canadian that team made me fall in love with hockey!
I still proudly wear my 2002 Modano Olympic Jersey :p
