Write what you feel....I'm a big fan, can you please sign this? That kind of thing.
Include an SASE in the envelope, too.
Now's the best time of year to do it, as all the players will be hitting up training camp very soon.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I explain in the letter how old I am, why I am a big fan of that player, congratulate him on any accomplishments, ask him to sign my index cards, thank him, and wish him good luck the rest of the season.
Like Rich said, remember to include a self addressed stamped envelope, to increase your chances of getting a letter back. And remember to check out the TTM database because there are a lot of useful addresses in there.
The maximum number of cards to enclose would in my opinion, be 5. Thats the most I'v ever gotten back, twice. If you enclose too many, your chances decrease of getting anything back.
Cheers,
Andrew

I've always heard Elmer Lach signs everything he gets, never hurts to try.

If you're looking to get an active player, send it c/o the team's address. As stated before right now is the best time as everyone is filtering in for training camp.

Try using SCF's Through The Mail Database to get addresses and see who signs (link at the bottom of my post). Very resourceful tool! Also, checking out the Autograph Central forum on SCF will give you the basics of sending autograph requests through the mail.
The Blue Jackets have been a great signing team for me over the years...I've gotten both Steve Mason and Rick Nash multiple times, as well as others like RJ Umberger. In my letters, I talk about how I'm a big fan, respect the way the play the game, etc. and then state that I'd be honored if they would please sign the enclosed card for my collection. Make sure to use please and thank you! Any questions, feel free to ask...
