    Handwriting and autographs

    Hi guys

not sure if theres a thread like this already..?

But I heard they might stop teaching handwriting..? Obviously if this were to happen, it would happen years into the future, but if this were to happen what do you guys think players autographs would look like in 30-40 years from now..?

Do you think they would just write their initials down..? Just wanted to see what other members opinions were on that :)

    Cheers,
    Andrew

GOING to stop teaching it? I wasn't aware they still tought it. I knew friends in high school who's handwriting was utterly attrocious. Everything now is about banging away on keyboards. (I believe we'll eventually stop talking too).

A real shame too, because handwriting is something that shows who you are. The effort you put into it easily translates into the effort you put into anything else.

There are some TERRIBLE autos out there. Most of the rookies these days might as well sign with an "x". They all need to check out some of the GOOD autos. Hasek comes to mind.

It'll be interesting to see how that trend develops. Letter writing and such is becoming a lost art.

One thing I've noticed from my occasional trips over to the baseball forums - I think the autograph issue is strongest in hockey. Some of those ball players really put a concerted effort into their name, including the rookies.

I think what the author means is that they're going to stop teaching cursive writing. Here's a news link:
    http://abcnews.go.com/US/end-cursive/story?id=12749517

As far as I've herd, handwriting in general will still be taught, but the "don't lift your pen off the paper for speed" cursive writing is being phased out. From the random snippets I herd it had to do with the lack of need with computers, the illegibility of the writing in general, and the lack of relation to the real English alphabet.

Heck, all these posts are in block letters and the only time you see cursive anymore is a doctor's prescription and your own signature. Neither of which anyone can read anyways.

Still, its a good point. That flowing "signature" style writing may not be the norm anymore on auto cards. Maybe we'll be seeing more autos like this:

Anyone know of a hockey player who just signs with printed letters? I couldn't think of any off the top of my head because they tend to go from full name auto to scrawls.

    Nice topic.

    Cheers,

Not entirely true. The older generation still use it. In fact my gramps only writes in cursive and his is the type that requires a great deal of time to decipher. Most people outside my family can't read it.

Also, when writing for a longer length of time, I used to a habit of transitioning from print to cursive as I got into consistent flow of thought. My English teachers hated me for it. Now I use a sort of hybrid where it's not quite printing, not quite cursive, but perfectly legible.

I have a feeling the athletes we see today signing their names with scratch or initials simply don't know how the write. Nothing to do with laziness, they just don't know how.
