Have jersey cards sunk this low?

I did an eBay search of closed auction featuring Mario Lemieux jersey cards. I could not believe it when I saw how many Lemieux jerseys had sold for less than $15! There must have been 30 - 40 of them! (not including the Goodwins)

Add to that were several Lemieux jerseys listed for under $10 that received NO bids! Have the value of jersey cards dropped that much? Even for superstar players such as Mario?

I have to admit that I have been neglecting my Lemieux collection in favor of other players, but these sale prices are unbelievable!

Surely, the flood of jersey cards on the market has hurt their value. Heck, I remember when UD Game Jersey cards were a 1:240 pack hit. Now they are 2:24 and even 3:1 in some of the high end packs. Maybe if this keeps up, jersey cards will become the new base card.

    +1

People truly do not appreciate the pre-lockout and hall of fame players anymore. A guy pulled a card at a show and seriously asked me if Wayne Gretzky was a good autograph pull. Another guy asked me who I collect, and when I told him Arturs Irbe, he asked if that was a hockey player. I slowly lose hope in the hobby when people do not know a name like Gretzky, when people do not know hockey enough to know a once famous goalie like Irbe, and when people are only in it for money and the exploitation of the collecting class.

And by next season, people will be saying Jeff who?, Taylor who?, Jordan who?, as they unload their last season cards in order to hunt and overpay for rookies, and photoshoot cards of Hopkins, and whoever else might crack an NHL lineup.

Card collectors are always obsessed with the Next New Thing.

I get in arguments all the time on here and on Hockey Blogs. I will defend a Hall Of Fame Player over any new player, at all costs.

It's not that Mario Jersey's are selling for less than $15, it's that there are now more Mario Lemieux Game-Used cards than there are scarce inserts and parallels when he actually played in the 90's.

Within 2 years, you will see 35% of all Game-Used cards sell for 1 cent each on eBay. There are already several that have sold this year at that price.

Picked up a Doug Gilmour Black Diamond quad jersey for a cent (still in my bucket too). Pretty colours too. I'm hoping it wasn't a fake and that's why nobody wanted it. haha

Since I came back to the hobby, I've noticed jersey cards become more and more worthless. It's not so much the flood of jersey cards that is the problem as the flood of patch cards. Sure, they're low numbered, but there's still a lot more than there seems to have been in the past. Add in the fact that it's still difficult to get a high end player, but a really nice patch of a no-name can still be a nice PC addition if it's your team.
It's basically what happened to inserts. For a time they were the ultimate. Once they'd been around awhile, people moved onto parallels and then jerseys, now 1/1s and patches.
The only thing that seems impervious to this treadmill is autos. But come on, who doesn't love an autograph. RCs too, I guess.

One interesting thing is that, not only have jerseys become a lesser card, but they've now been around long enough that some people are not happy having a jersey card until they know it's game used, not event or photo shoot. This is something auto cards have, and continue to go through with the sticker vs hard-signed debate.

At the end of the day you have to decide if you want a collection to keep or if you want to rotate it to keep up with the times. Neither is a bad choice, it just relates to what you want. Some people want all the cards, some just want to always have the hottest/most valuable cards.

This. I have no idea idea why Rookie Auto Patch Cards are worth so much money in comparison to actual pieces of Hockey History. Event used cards are just barely a step above Manufactured patch cards to me. I mean, really, what is the difference? The player throws the jersey on and immediately takes it off. It has no meaning, it was never worn in a game, it probably isn't the jersey pictured...I just don't get why people pay absurd prices for these cards or why we let the card industry put this crap out.

We need Topps back in the hockey market, if just for refractors/atomic refractors/superfractors!

Memorabilia is going down hill unless that particular jersey is so rare that they are debating whether to let companies cut them up.

You see this with Patch cards and hard-signed autos as well.

Only thing that is holding up are Shields... but Panini had a bright idea for those too... =.= Dominion Dual Shields e.g. Hall /5... just brilliant isn't it

I understand what they are intending to do but certain things shouldn't be saturated or over-used.

Rookies are what people collect, once one year ends and the next one begins... they are inevitably moved a side for the new crop.
