Shootouts...
First of all, I dislike shootouts. Granted, I enjoyed the concept initially; however, that was short-lived. They are fun to watch and I really enjoy the creativity of the playes. Some of those dekes are pretty mind-blowing. Case in point: Malik's exploits.
Yet if one thing was drilled into my head from the day I stumbled out of the bench in my too-large skates, with my name written in permanent marker on a strip of hockey tape across my helmet, to my Junior days, it was "there is no "I" in team". Now, the NHL has obviously come up with the concept of ROWs (Regulation or Overtime Wins) being the deciding factor in the case of a tie in points, but when all is said and done, team points are being earned by single players and a goaltender.
How many of you still feel the same excitement of a penalty shot? I have nothing against penalty shots, as one is only obtained when a clear scoring opportunity is taken away. But shootouts have watered down the thrill ten fold.
That's just a quick rant. I wanted to cover the key points, and express my distaste. All in all, let's keep the shootouts to All-Star weekend and pre-season.

Being against shootouts isn't a rant, it's pure common sense.
They have ruined decent hockey.

Although shootouts cause inaccurate results, and almost a luck factor, I do love them, and it shows the amazing skill of the NHL talent has to offer
I like them, but not when the jets are playing in one

I am also not a fan of shootouts. They're something you do at the end of practice for fun, not what should be deciding a game in my opinion.

Greg Wyshynski (aka Puck Daddy) has long ranted against the shootout, and I have long echoed his exact sentiments. In fact, he went on about them at length on the Sportsguy podcast earlier today (about 8 minutes in):

The shootout is an absolutely dreadful way to end 65 minutes of a team game. Make overtime 10 minutes. Make it 3-on-3. Use a variation of the NCAA football overtime and give each team a power play until one team scores and the other doesn't. Anything but allowing an individual skills competition to decide the fate of 30 teams scrambling for 16 playoff spots. It's easily one of the most ludicrous things in professional sport.

I agree with your points, however to take 65 minutes of play and say next goal wins it all still seems a bit lopsided
Much like football, where it's one game championship, rather than best of
However ot is used in playoffs so why not reg season?
I'm guessing revenue, excitement, and quicker games
Continuous ot is and always will be the best

I must be in the minority here. I like the concept of the shoot-out. What I'd rather see is a 10-minute overtime first, then the shoot-out. But only during the regular season, of course.
But, I do not like the fact that you get 2 points for a shoot-out win. IMODO, if you win in overtime, you get 2 points. If you win in a shoot-out, 1 point. You get nothing for a loss and you take it like a man!
BTW, ties a for Fathers Day only.

Can't disagree with that, but the league would never allow it. You can't have five-hour regular-season games in the NHL ... but there has to be a better way to determine a winner. Breakaways? Blah.

i like the shootouts actually, still think they are exciting especially when someone like Datsyuk is involved...but definitely think OT should be extended to at least 10 minutes, if not another full 20

I really like this concept! Like I said, the shootouts are fun to watch, but they shouldn't be a determining factor. This way, everybody wins
