Ice, I see your point. I, too, have tried making some of those trades, and found it very frustrating. I mean, if I'm offering cards you need to finish a set, and you don't have any of my wants, why bicker over a dollar?
I have picked up WAY too many filler cards just in order to help others out with their collections. I have a buttload of stuff that I'm HOPING I can move someday, but it's not likely....

Been there, done that. I'm sure we've all lost out on making deals because we either felt that we wouldn't "win" the trade or our trade partner had the same feeling. It all depends on whether a person is willing to have some flexibility when it comes to trade talks - while this deal they may be giving 25 for 20, in the other they may happily take 30 while only giving up 25. For some they have to emerge victorious.
I have relaxed my criteria for trading quite a bit in recent years, and often just wing it. If you have a card or cards I want, and I have a card or cards you want, I'll do what I can to make something happen. The cards in my traders box are there for a reason: I don't want them. If I have to give an extra 5-10 bucks worth of "book value" I generally do not have a problem with that. I would rather have 1 more Carey Price card than 3 extra cards in my traders box because we couldn't bridge a book value gap of less than 5-10 dollars.

In my limited experiences of trading in this hobby, my goal is finding cards that I want in my collection. I do not look at book value. I do look at a general fairness where both parties are happy in the end. If a proposed trader chooses not to finalize a deal for whatever reason, that is their choice and we as hobbyists must respect that, no matter how much we "want that card". Life's far too short to worry about the small issues. My guess is, I have had as many trades fall apart as compared to how many I have made. That's the way it goes. To me a "hobby" doesn't mean making money. It is about respect your fellow person in the hobby and above all having positive experiences.
I'm with coolhandluke, their is no need to get personal. We should be able to respectfully disagree on the public forums. If, however, you really can't help yourself, it should be PP'd.

All depends on how bad the BV short party wants the card.
$5.00 on a Hundred is nothing but on $20.00 it's 25% of the value.
When I encounter this in my favour, I always throw in an additional Insert/Parallel from $4.00-$8.00 that the shorter party can use.
To me it's all about being fair.

I agree!
I have a relative sense of what BV's are, but I take into consideration of what cards I'm trading. Also I try to get a feel of who it is I'm trading with, and what their idea of trade values are. If the other trader wants something more to bridge the gap, I think of it as a no big deal, and make it happen! Even if I'm pulling bait from my trade partner.
The logic is. We are in this hobby to collect what it is we collect, and even if we end up with something we don't want, we do actually make contact with someone who may be able to help us out down the road in a future deal. My thinking is if I go out of my way to make a successful deal work out, that trader will become more inclined to come to me with my wants later on. If they don't! Oh well! At least I had a positive interaction.

This is the smartest thing I've ever heard...well...seen on these boards. A little off topic, and not to hijack this thread from the OP, but if you're spending money you need to live off of on cardboard, you have a problem. This is a hobby, not a neccessity.
As to the original topic, being a Minnesota Wild fan/collector, I'm so sick and tired of being offered a ton of Wild Score and Victory rookies, cheap Wild GUs and autos for high end cards like Tavares and Hall YGs, Seguin rookie ticket autos and Skinner FWAs. I hate trading away one or two big cards like those for a big cheap Wild package that I won't remember getting in return a few months later. Granted, it's a different story if I'm getting a big piece in said package. For instance, I miss that Seguin rookie ticket auto...but I got a Prosser 1/1 in return for my collection so that's alright.
Don't get me wrong, I love collecting all things Minnesota Wild. I just hate trading away high demand/high value cards for a bunch of Minnesota Wild cards that can't hold value any better than a scubadiver holding water. But that's just my two cents.Last edited by wild4life; 12-04-2011 at 10:43 PM.

here's why you should never trade by bv.....
a 1965 Topps Mickey Mantle card books for $600... raw it sells for about $100
a common Derek Jeter auto books for $150, and sells for $125-150
should the person making this trade have to give up 3-4 Jeter auto's for that 65 topps mantle?
