Panini trying to match up with UD

I've noticed a lot of similarities

Dominion...The Cup (obvious because Panini need a ultra high end product)

    Limited...Ultimate (very similar, even packaging)

    Certified...SPGU

    Elite...SPA

personally, i think dominion is nicer than the cup and now that they will be releasing it for the 2nd time, i think more people will consider dominion a close rival to the cup cause as of now, cup cards still out value dominion by a good amount.

Panini has still failed to match the Cup in so many ways. I would say it is a half way point from being a super high-end product like the Cup.

The Cup stands on a different level.

What Panini has done is replicate what they have done for all other sports. Hockey collectors come from a whole different breed. Panini only realized a bit of that by bringing some meaning and calling the product Dominion (The Dominion of Canada) instead of National Treasure. They however, don't realize that adding more jersey, base... list goes on, doesn't make a product better.

Call primes and basically making them patch like comparison is just mind-boggling and ugly. They have way too many SP /99 rookies, and the other rookies are what Ultimate offers... just an auto that sells for... if your lucky a couple bucks. At least in Cup they all are APRs. And stop mass producing shields... yes /5 is mass producing, they have 4 too many. Book shields are cool, not when they are /5. QUIT INFLATING THE MARKET PANINI, sooner or later everything is going to be common. Somethings should remain scarce and treasured cause that is what creates value and excites people. I am excited opening a product in hopes of getting a 1/1 shield

If they want to create a competitor, make something like the Cup. 5-6 cards, thick and nice. Offer quality over quantity. Plain and simple.

Dominion needs improvement and you won't see it this year cause dominion has already be designed, decided, and made... maybe in a couple years or so.

Panini knows how to flood a market. Just ask basketball collectors pulling a Kobe auto out of every other box and causing values to plummet.

As for Dominion vs Cup: Until Panini comes up with a good answer to Limited Logos, Signature Patches, and Honorable Numbers they will never match The Cup in my opinion. Not enough hard-signed patch cards of star players and too many of the great designs go to rookie-only sets.

Compare the resell value on cup and dominion on the market and you will see how far away panini and others are. But its good they try at least its not bad with competition in the business but they have a long way to beat Cup with all the legendary sets.

On the booklets, it's the old wider vs. deeper argument.

UD produces numerous 1/1's of rookie shields. Example:

    Cup Shield Dual Crosby/Tavares
    Cup Shield Dual Auto Couture/Tavares
    Cup Shield Dual Auto Tavares/JVR
    Cup Shield Dual Auto Tavares/Bailey
    Cup Shield Dual Auto Tavares/Benn
    Cup Shield Dual Auto Tavares/Duchene
    Cup Shield Dual Auto Tavares/Monster
    Cup Shield Dual Auto Tavares/Hedman
    Cup Shield Dual Auto Tavares/Kane
    Cup Shield Dual Auto Tavares/Wilson

That is 10 unique 1/1 NHL Shields in 2009-10 The Cup.

Dominion Rookie Ensign Dual Auto Hall/Skinner /5
Dominion Rookie Ensign Dual Auto Hall/Seguin 1/1

That is 6 unique 1/1 NHL Shields in 2010-11 Dominion.

Which company is really the one inflating the market? Well, both of them! This year's Cup had Dual Shields of the same player on it! So instead of having P.K. wear 7 jerseys to make 7 Shield cards, they had him wear 7 jerseys to make 6 Shield Cards.

No matter how you slice it, having numerous 1/1 rookie jersey shields makes a bit of a mockery of the importance of the cards that are being made.
