I'm really starting to hate 1/1s...
As a player collector, I get really frustrated because almost half of my player's cards are 1/1s. The most common card I have yet to add to my collection is an Upper Deck Exclusives High Gloss /10 and I have about 10-12 1/1s yet to find.
So far, I've been able to add four 1/1s to my collection but here's my problem. In doing so, I've met/dealt with some real nice collectors (not a one of them have been bad whatsoever) but find myself dealing away such cards as Tavares and Hall YGs and Seguin Rookie Ticket Autos. You know; cards I'd rather not have to deal away...some with sentimental value, cards I pulled out of my very first pack of hockey cards and didn't even know what I had til months later.
This wouldn't be so bad if I collected a player worth something. However, I collect a Minnesota Wild player (which automatically means the hobby chooses to ignore and devalue it, much like the NHL does in general) and not a player like Koivu, Heatley, Setoguchi...I collect Nate Prosser. A guy who keeps going back and forth between the AHL and NHL and may be doomed to a career of doing so.
So, I'm giving up valuable rookie cards of #1 and #2 overall draft picks for...a rare Nate Prosser card. That's not going to hold any value. To anyone. Except me. My Prosser collection grows at the expense of my valuable cards I'd like to hold onto. I have a rare heart defect and, while I love collecting cards for the fun of it, it's nice to know I have some cards I can sell if I need to because I can't work. I won't get anything for my Prosser collection. Maybe $150 for the cards and another $200 for the autographed hat and jersey (but only because Brent Burns and Brad Bombardir also signed them). That's $350. I almost have that between my RNH YG and Canvas YG alone.
Another thing that gets on my nerves is that, just because it's a 1/1, people automatically assume it's worth $100 plus. I'll tell you this, I'm fairly certain I'm the biggest Prosser collector out there and there's no way in H-E-Double Hockey Sticks I'm going to pay that much for a card of Nate Prosser when I can and have bought a different version of the same card on E-bay for $20. If it was Mikael Granlund that'd be a different story.
I'm sorry, but as a Wild fan (I can't tell you how many times people have offered me Victory and Score Wild rookies for Tavares or Hall YGs), Prosser fan and player collector, I feel like it's real easy for me to be taken advantage of whether intentionally or not. I'm not saying the other traders/sellers aren't great, I've received some very good cards...but I begin to wonder if it's been worth it when I'm looking at hundreds of dollars worth in cards going out and getting much less in return.
Anyway...there's my rant for the year.

I hear you exactly. I agree with you that there are way too many 1/1s. If your PC players was in The Cup, there is going to be at least 15 Printing Plates, not including other 1/1 items. I know exactly what you mean on the over valuing of 1/1s as well. If there is only 1 of a certain card, it seems to make people think it is x100 the value of the regular. Hopefully you can track them down and eventually wear down the sellers to a point where they will sell at a reasonable price.

Not trying to fuel the fire, but there's a Nate Prosser 1/1 plate here you might be able to get for all your high-end YGs lol

I see what you're saying, the market has been insanely over saturated with 1/1 printing plates. Personally, I don't bother with them and I don't even count the plates in my collection stats. To me, they're not really cards, they're just metal used to make the cards. I only have one plate of Bishop and I just picked it up because it was reasonably priced. Bishop has 40 1/1s and only 3 of them are true 1/1s. Just don't collect the 1/1s if you don't like them or maybe player collecting just isn't the right fit for you. In the end, it's all for fun so buy what you like and ignore the rest.

I feel for you. I'm having the same problems with my Geoffrion PC. I had a trader offer me a recent 1/1 of his, and I offered WELL over $400.00 worth of cards, 3-4 in total, each a great trader, PLUS some cash, and this still wasn't good enough. If it wasn't a part-time NHL'er I'd understand, but Geoffrion is in the AHL right now. It's tough.

Avoid 1/1s over-rated and only for the ego. I have over 300 different Tavares cards, and only two 1/1's. If they fall on your lap, bonus, but don't sell the farm to own them. I understand some want to collect a player who may not have alot of selection so they then turn to the 1/1 search. Would suggest to go after a second player instead.

I know your pain
I collect Shea Weber and Beckett has 146 1/1's listed for him. I agree with Dean a lot of the 1/1's are over rated. I don't go out looking for them but if i find one for a great deal I may get it. And I will not trade to get one because i don't want to give up my arm to get them.
But don't give up it is all part of the fun of collecting

Well, I hear ya on that combo card thing. I collect Logan Couture but for me I only go for cards where he alone is on the card... So all those dual cards don't show up in my pc. It makes things easier, especially when Couture has dual shields shared with Tavares, Duchene, Kane, etc.
