Fantasy Deadline Deals
Did a post like this on hockey trade rumours a couple years back and it was a pretty big success. Figured I'd bring it to SCF because we could have a ton of fun with it! Just come up with some trades that are reasonable and explain why you think so!
To Toronto:
2nd round draft pick
Mike Duco
To Vancouver:
Mikhail Grabovski
Canucks can now have a player to compliment Cody Hodgson, Toronto gets a gritty prospect and a 2nd round pick to help build the team. Canucks would need to clear some more cap room, but this would be a very solid trade considering it's exactly Burke's asking price.
To Buffalo:
Patrick Kane
Mark McNeill
2nd round pick
To Chicago:
Ryan Miller
Chicago needs goaltending, that's no secret. Can they give up Kane for Miller? They are paying more for an elite goalie here, and it would be unlikely that Chicago would be willing to give up that much for Miller, but that trade could make them very formidable for the next few years. Buffalo meanwhile gets a top prospect, an NHL star and a draft pick. It's an unlikely trade but who knows what could happen!

I'll bite:
Oilers extend Ales Hemsky - 5 years, 24 million, and don't trade him!
To NYR: Ryan Smyth, Theo Peckham, 2012 4th Round Pick
To EDM: Tim Erixon, Wotek Wolski, 2012 1st Round Pick
Wolski is a 'negative' asset coming back to the Oilers, so the Rangers can add Smyth for a Cup run (need to make the salaries kinda balance). Peckham gives the Rangers another hard-nosed defender.
Oilers resign Smyth in the offseason, let Wolski walk as a UFA.
To CHI: Nikolai Khabibulin, Eric Belanger
To EDM: Ray Emery, 2012 1st Rounder
Chicago adds a vertern goalie to solidify themselves.... and strong faceoff man. I think CHI could do this and remain under the cap - but another piece may have to be invovled to make the numbers work.
To BUF: Magnus Paajarvi, Alex Plante, Tim Erixon, Chicago's 1st, 2012 3rd Round Pick.
To EDM: Tyler Myers, Drew Stafford
This will be the craziest of the deals I'm posting :) Theory being that the Oilers need defense, and they need size up front. This deal with Buffalo adds both.
The Sabres have had a miserable season, and this really shakes things up. With Erixon they add an elite prospect on defense, and Plante as a former first rounder can step in right away.... back pairing guy yes, but he's NHL ready. MPS give the Sabres an elite prospect up front - and a pair of draft picks add to their future.
To CAR: Linus Omark, Devan Dubnyk, NYR 1st, Conditional Swap of picks
To EDM: Cam Ward
The condition on the picks is as follows: At anytime in the next 3 years, the Hurricanes may elect to trade 1st round picks with the Oilers. No Lottery exception. At anytime the Hurricanes may also opt to trade their 3rd round pick to the Oilers for a 2nd rounder.
I would suspect that this 'condition' gets used in 2012. The Oilers finish lower in the standings, and the Hurricanes use it to move up a couple of spots. They can obviously wait though. The "3rd for a 2nd" option is put in there becuase after this season, there is a good chance that the Oilers will be the better of the two teams, so it gives Carolina another option to still improve their draft standing at some point.
The players involved: Obviously the Oilers get the star netminder they lack.
The Hurricanes, perpetual bottom feeders since their win in '06, re-tool big time. They get a promising prospect in Omark, Dubnyk gives them an option in net for the short term - and he may be a good one going forward for them. The Rangers 1st rounder gives them an extra pick in the upcoming draft.

I wouldn't trade Duco for Grabovski. Hodgson isn't having a problem finding guys to play with (not sure where that came from) and Duco is going to be valuable come playoff time.
I can see it sort of looking like the Canucks have trouble with their bottom lines, but when everyone is healthy:
Sedin-Sedin-Burrows
Higgins-Kesler-Booth
Raymond-Hodgson-Hansen
Malholtra-Lapierre-Bitz
and the great part about that, besides 5 centers (and Reinprecht in the minors), is that you can use almost any player on any line. The Sedins will never be checkers but guys like Burrows, Kesler, Higgins, Hansen, Raymond, Malholtra, Lapierre and others can play from the 1st to the 4th if needed. Crap, even Bitz has proven he can skate on the top line for short periods.
If I was Mike Gillis I would be shopping Ballard HARD and willing to deal Raymond, but that's about it unless an offer I couldn't refuse came along for Schneids, but I think he'll be more valuable in the playoffs than anything. Being a RFA, Van is going to get something, it's just a matter of what.

Imagine Hodgson with someone who is a genuine scorer and the numbers he'd put up. Especially given his TOI, he has put up impressive numbers considering who he's been playing with. Canucks would then have so much more scoring depth. Raymond will more than likely stay on the 2nd line for the next few games because his play has been getting better with Booth and Kessy. Ballard is way too tough to trade with an injury (concussion related) and look at what happened to the Canucks defence last year. Ballard has bee great most of the season and we need that depth in the post season. Canucks are good on defence for the next 5 years or so especially with some of their prospects. All the Canucks need is either a scoring, speedy winger or a power forward who can put the puck in the net. They need someone for the 2nd or 3rd line IMO.

I like how all your trades go together, although I could see the Cam Ward being done at draft day as opposed to deadline day. Tyler Myers is a tough pry from Buffalo though, but would look good in an Oilers

As far as "fantasy" trades go - I think you're right. The Carolina & Buffalo deals would more likely be draft day trades then deadline..... and instead of a 'condional swap' the Oilers would be in a situation to trade down with Carolina - so they know exactly what they're getting.
Maybe a similar "trade down" with Buffalo would be enough to tip the scales on that Myers one too.... though that would mean that Buffalo would have to finish higher than Carolina & Edmonton in the standings. Something like Edmonton trading the #2 pick to Carolina for #4, to get the Ward deal done.... then trading #4 to Buffalo for #7, to get the Myers deal to go through.

Yeah. It'd be interesting to see those pulled off that's for sure!
