A Happy Haunting

A few months back a poster asked if collecters were being "haunted" by a specific player who kept popping up in their breaks. No matter what box, brand or series you bought, the big hit from the box always seemed to be the same guy. For years, my "hauntee" was Antoine Vermette. His cards always seemed to be the one to show up when I was looking for PC or a big hit. Even on those rare occasions when I'd get a jersey card from a blaster box, seven out of ten times it would be Vermette.

That has changed recently. I have almost completed a few of my PCs and was thinking of starting an Ilya Kovalchuk collection. I've always liked Kovy and have been impressed by his play lately. Although I've been collecting since 1987, I never held out Kovy's, so I'm basically starting from scratch.

Oddly enough, it seems that my new "haunting" player is Ilya Kovalchuk. Over the past three weeks I have bought loose packs at Kmart and several of the mixed pack boxes. From them, I have been lucky enough to pull some Kovy inserts, parallels and even three jersey cards (11/12 Pinn Threads, 06/07 Beehive Matted Materials, and a 09/10 UD Ser2 Game Jersey)

If Kovalchuk is going to be haunting my breaks, I will consider myself lucky!

You lucky ducky. My "hauntee" is the player i hate the most of any NHL, well, hockey player that has ever played the game: Sean Avery.

You could do much worse than Kovalchuk, that's for sure. I've been getting a few Brodeur & Datsyuk items of late, which is also pretty nice. There's enough collectors of these guys out there that I don't have to sit on the cards for long.

Drew Stafford for me. Any time I open loose packs of any series 1 years there's always a Stafford GU. Last three jerseys i pulled from loose packs
Of series 1 were all him and all same color blue swatch

I was haunted so badly by Yashin, Satan and Bryan Leetch that I have not bought a Hobby Box since the 2003-04 season.

That bad. Every jersey, every insert, every parallel, was one of these 3, drove me crazy.

I've had 4 "Hauntings" from the last two seasons: Ottawa Rookies (Da Costa, Wiercoch and Greening), Ben Scrivens (7 autos, 4 RCs), Anze Kopitar (9 jerseys) and (ugh...) Steve Ott (12! memorabilia/#ed cards). I have yet to crack a box that hasn't had one of these as the big hits.

Daniel Sedin, Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom have been all over me this year.. Pulled at least 4 autos of each from Limited & CR alone.
