This is my point as well. I teach the 6th grade and yesterday this Kony 2012 was a HUGE distraction at school. Kids had it written all over themselves and sticky notes plastered to their clothing. I heard about this individual before these kids were even alive.

I didn't have a single student all day tell me the issues behind Kony 2012 because they didn't know them. It's just a trend, and the media sensationalizes it for these kids.

I printed off a blank political map of Africa and asked my students to point to Uganda. Not a single student all day came anywhere close. One student...

    Me: Point to Uganda.
Student: I don't know where it is.
Me: (holding up a map of Africa) It's in Africa.
    Student: Where is Africa?
Me: (long, stunned pause) THIS WHOLE MAP IS AFRICA.

wow... thats not very good haha. In sweden geography started in first grade. i think i can point out all countrys and capitals on a map in my sleep ...

What comes to mind is the Jay Leno show, when he was out on the streets, showing maps of the world and asking where some countrys were located.. and NO ONE could point out Australia, germany, iraq etc... Is the school system bad in general, or are people just stupid?

yeah, i am a youth minister who works with 11-18 years olds so naturally this has been a big thing this week. So, i spent a couple of hours researching this from all sides this week. The guy does need to be arrested. However, he hasn't been in uganda in almost 5 years and his current army is less than 300.
One of the biggest issues is that we are being asked to support the ugandan government/military in the capture of kony even though the ugandan military is known to commit atrocities nearly as bad as kony.

one of my biggest issues is that he is #1 on the world courts most wanted list and has been for a while. Why isn't the UN being asked to do something about this instead of the US?

Also, while they organization doesn't appear to be taking large salaries or anything, they have spent over 1/3 of their donations in making the movie and promoting it. Only 1/3 of what is donated is actually being used in uganda, and then, who knows what percentage is supporting the current government.

I would never bash anyone who wants to try and make a difference for a cause they believe in, but I also feel this is getting ridiculous. Tell me in the past 20+ years has anyone (especially teens/kids) really cared about Uganda or Africa in general. Not only that, but these people who are "supporting" it don't even know the story behind it like rchurchward said.

This has been going on half way around the world for 20+ years, and quite frankly I have a hard time believing a bunch of Americans are going to change it here in 2012. I truly do feel for the people this has effected, but I just don't see it happening.

This was also my point...tell me again how you've always cared for the children in Uganda? Tell me where Uganda is? If you haven't cared for the last 26, then you get my point.

I agree that it's absolutely horrible what he's doing. There's no questioning that. All those donations going to Invisible Children? I read that 31% of that money is going to the children in Ugana (check Youtube; it's sourced there). Taking down Kony won't stop the whole thing, anyway, in all likelihood. He's not the only one doing it.
