What I expected, though it doesn't matter. Sedin is still out indefinitely with a reported concussion (I'm surprised it's not a broken jaw) and this just gets Keith rested up for the playoffs.
Basically, other than the fact he's not being paid for those games, he gets a nice little vacation to prep.

Yeah I'm not happy with it either.

Anyone serious about player safety would have done more. Personally I would have given him 4 games but commuted it to the 1st round of the playoffs.

CHI isn't in much danger of missing the playoffs, so like you said Keith pretty much gets an unpaid vacation for knocking Daniel Sedin out indefinitely. Does that sound like you're sending the right message about player safety? Or does it still sound like the best way to deal with the opposition's superstars is to let your scrubs knock them out of the game or series?

Sorry, this experiment ended the moment Shanahan caved to GM pressure at the end of the pre-season. The only way we're going to get player safety to the forefront is if the disciplinary team doesn't have to answer to Bettman and his two biggest friends, TV Ratings and Cash.

Exactly what I'd thought he'd get. Hopefully Daniel will be back soon.

Well, first off I wouldn't call Keith a scrub. I have no respect for him now, but he's not a scrub.
Second, I disagree on Shanahan. As the season has gone on it has gotten easier and easier to tell what the discipline will be. You'd be hard pressed to find someone (outside of van-homers screaming for more and chi-homers screaming for less) who didn't see 5 games coming on this one.
Also, I'm not unhappy with the suspension, I just don't think it matters. I wish Keith hadn't done it not just because it's my team, but because there is no room in the game for that, whether it was retaliatory or not.

The league as a whole has gone overboard with suspensions this year IMO...I'm all about player safety, however simple solution to the problem is eliminating the instigator penalty and I guarantee less guys would be taking runs at players... Its a fast paced game (while I didn't see the hit) a lot of times guys put themselves in vulnerable positions or change direction at the last minute... Boarding penalties I'm okay with nailing players with hefty suspensions and fines but some of the suspensions handed out have been borderline ridiculous this year... Guys are getting suspended for hits that are only 2 minute minor penalties in games... Unless a 5min major is assessed I see it as an abortion to the game... Let the players police themselves and it'll clean up REAL quick...

I get what you're saying bu...
watch the hit. It should have been 5+game at the very least. The refs REALLY screwed this one up.

After further review was it a bad elbow? absolutely... I don't disagree... in fact I think it warrants a 5min major and game misconduct... which in turn would warrant a suspension... but if the referees deem the hit to only be worth a minor penalty, I'm not so sure....Shannahan loves wearing the brass but sometimes I think he forgets the style he used to play when he laced them up. In other news Vancouver needs a legit tough guy or those funny looking Sedin twins are gonna keep getting their clocks cleaned...

1 - What does the fact that Shanahan was the kind of player he was have to do with anything?

2 - If something should be suspendable and should have been a major but isn't called as such, you should just forget the suspension? I don't trust NHL officials enough to have absolutely no second guessing at all.

3 - The Canucks need for a "tough guy" is:
A - False. The Canucks are tough enough. Just because people who've only really ever watched them last year's finals still like to talk about them doesn't prove anything and
B - Is in no way an excuse of any sort for anyone pulling a stupid, selfish stunt like Keith did.

I think you are misunderstanding what I am saying. Like I said...I agree with this particular suspension....(as it was a dirty hit)
I'm a Philly fan, so I hate and have distrust for refs as much as anyone does lol
I wasn't basing my statement of needing a tough guy on anything from last years playoffs, simply think enforcers make for a good deterrence.
Shanahan has been inconsistent in my opinion with regards to his duties, the guy was known to lay people out just like Keith did in his playing days... Headshots are no good for the game, this was clearly a headshot. Maybe Shanahan and other brass need to emphasize to refs to hand out tougher in game penalties on hits like that, as a player may think twice about putting up an elbow if he knows his team will be down a man for 5mins, and he knows he may get thrown out.
