Another Bubble Burst

I frequently get asked by friends and co-workers to have a look at their cards to see if anything is worth anything significant.
A co-worker approached me over the weekend and asked if I would want to buy his cards. I said I'd have a look but can't say if I'd buy them without seeing them.
So the next day he brings in a huge box full of cards in binders and in top loaders. He says he wants $3500 for the box. I again tell him that I will have to look at them first.
So I started looking and what do I find.........................

LOL the usual 90's collection that everyone has or had at one point. The pro sets, OPC premier, score, upper deck from early 90's. But wait, he also had the super rare Brett Hull rookie from Topps none the less. As well as a bunch of rookies of great players but aren't worth much.

I look at everything and try to figure out how to burst his bubble without making him feel like an idiot. Its pretty tough to do actually.
So I told him that I didn't want the stuff, and that he is better off keeping it. He said he would take $500 off the price. I said no, read between the lines here. He didn't get it. I told him he couldn't pay someone to take the stuff away. He got really offeneded and called me a few names. He said he would take them to the local card store and they would buy them. I wished him luck and that was that.

Its funny how people think their cards are worth lots of money because they paid a lot for them like 20 years ago.

You've got people that collected for 3-5 years in the 90s.... during the hobby boom.... ones that thought cards would end up being worth lots someday - becuase they heard all the stories of stuff from the 50s & 60s selling for big bucks in the 80s & 90s - so the logical extension of that is that stuff from the 80s and 90s must be worth lots today.

Anyone who follows the hobby knows that's not the case - but I'm never surprised when I heard stories like this. "I spend $1500 on these back in the day. They much be worth 3x that much, since they're 20 years old".

I still can't seem to part with my 90/91 Score Factory set, my 90/91 UD Hi factory set or my Pro Set I & II in binders. Seems a shame to just chuck 'em................

Me neither. I still have all my old 90s stuff. Not worth anything, but doesn't mean I don't like owning them. Actually been thinking of doing a 'master set' of Pro Set.

so with tis line of thinking why wont our cards from the 2000's be worth less 20 years from now ?!?

I can almost gaurentee you that this will be the case.

Stuff from 10 years ago has dropped in value big time. How populat do you think Spezza, Nash, Zetterberg, and Hemsky will be once they retire? (the correct answer is "not").

Even stuff from current young stars - Crosby will likely maintain his value (at least to some degree) Ovechkin is already tanking, Malkin was never that high...... and I figure (at best) there is maybe 1 or 2 other "under 25 stars" that will have much value, at all, in 20 years.

Yes - As long as there is a hobby, you will be able to find someone who wants it...... but let's say Taylor Hall plays in the NHL for 20 years (which is a lot) records 400 goals & 400 assists (which is a lot), is an All Star 12 times, but never wins a cup...... so his body of work is not good enough for the Hall of Fame........ do you really think there will be a market for his stuff anywhere near what there is now??





Collect cards becuase its fun, becuase you enjoy it. If you're looking for a good long term investment: Talk to a financial advisor, not an LCS owner

Well pointed guys.

Think of the guy who may have been moved several times, he has managed to hide his shoe boxes many years, possibly forgot them somewhere sometimes.
He sees an article in which Gretzky rookie has sold million and then he finally remember his at least hundred year (15 ) old hockey cards. Heureka!
He dig them out and navigate to the local hockey card expo, thinks his new soon coming mustang

First dealer mumbles and second says burn them ..

When I first started collecting as a kid, I used to frame base cards not knowing they were worthless :P But then again, I was a kid!

That's why if you collect vintage card of players like Orr, Howe, Richard, Beliveau, Horton, Dryden and other big team stars, chance are that your investment will hold value thru the years. HOF RC before 70 is, IMO, a sure bet. There's a lot of young guys who collect vintage, and that's a good sign !

i feel like a lot of major cards from the 2000's will hold their value...things like numbered RC's and SP cards...just look at the 98/99 StarQuest Gold cards...but those are few and far between i know, and its gonna be hit or miss on the players...I had a huge run on a goalie back then, and i saved them hoping his career would pan out...his name? DAN BLACKBURN lol

Haha sounds like me a few years back. I found all my old hockey cards and was amazed that they were still in Nmt-Mt shape! I bought a Beckett and looked up all the values, I mean Lidstrom and Modano RCs have got to worth some money, right?

...

At least the book value on the Brodeur looked nice, haha!

amen!! People bring their cards to the flea market and try to sell them bunch of junk!! They think they have a treasure or something
