SPA Future Watch Prices?? too low??

Is it just me, or are the new future watch auto rc prices really low on ebay, especially right after it's release?? I don't ever recall them being so low and quite honestly I'm shocked. Could panini contenders have anything to do with it? Personally I love the calder contender auto rc's and feel they are close comparison to the FWA, and even #'d to less, but fwa's have always been a staple in the rookie card collection and highly sought after. Def one of my fav rookie cards!

Aside from the Nuge which is around $170+ which is high for now but shouldn't dip too much under $140 when it settles.

you can get a landeskog redemption (which doesn't help) for $40-60
    scheifele for $30 now
    hodgson for under $30
    couturier for $33

but the rest of the good rookies like zibanejad, johansen, read, gardiner etc etc, are all fairly dirt cheap in my opinion.

Trying to think about last year, and i'm pretty sure when Hall's came out, it was probably over $140 right away, and the Eberle and Seguin and skinner were probably all in the $60-100 range right??

maybe this year has slightly less top end rookies, but there certainly are plenty of good rookies.

So in conclusion, are you finding these prices too low and steals right now?? I know it's the offseason, but it's a brand new product. maybe people are saving for the cup and dominion and prime, I don't know. Color me confused on these fwa prices though.

There's a lot of factors going into it, most of which you mentioned. The one that you forgot? It's mid-July and SPA is two months overdue. People have emptied their wallets in the meantime on Titanium and other products. You mentioned Contenders, and I think there's something to be said for that.

And this is a very weak rookie class. Probably the weakest we've had since the lockout. There may be some eventual late bloomers, but beyond RNH who in this set is going to be heavily collected in six months?

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

well i agree with all that, and i know it's been pushed back multiple times, i guess that has a lot to do with it. people are disappointed in waiting, so they spent money elsewhere. but future watches should still be just as popular, maybe they'll rebound when the season kicks in and the rookies have a good first or second year.

i don't think the rookie class is that weak at all, i think it's very well rounded. landeskog was rookie of the year but stuck in colorado where hobby love isn't huge, same with henrique on the devils. but i see scheifele having a good rookie year, same as zibanejad. then you have stud's like couturier and matt read should be just fine. kassian and hodgson will adjust better to their new teams.

you have hobby love with the leafs and habs with gardiner, colborne, frattin, scrivens, leblanc, palushaj and diaz.

i really like this rookie class.

and i love fwa's. so they seem like steal's to me now. hopefully spa comes out on time next season and this doesn't happen.

I don't know if it's the rookie crop itself that's weak or where the rookies are playing that's weak. It's a very well-rounded class for sure. Also another factor, everyone and their mother has a PC player/sets, etc. from this year and previous years and a lot of people don't have the time or money to inherit another one. Everyone was overshadowed by the guy selling for huge dough in Edmonton. The others got little media coverage, which helps drives their sales!

I think the biggest problem is that Upper Deck waited until the bloody summer to release this product! Casual collectors in my city seem to put the cards away after the playoffs are finished. I'm not sure if there is an overall dip, but there certainly is in my area.

That's a good point. It's definitely more exciting to collect as the season is going on!

I won't speak to the Leafs fans and their tendencies, but of those three names you mentioned, only one of these guys has any chance, IMO, of being a legitimate NHL player for the next several years. Palushaj is a fringe NHL'er at best, Diaz I am amazed that the Habs have given him a 2-year deal, and Leblanc may yet blossom. But even though Leblanc has a bit of a following due to being a Quebec-born player, his prices have dropped off big time since his YG and such hit the market. He may well start the season in Hamilton, and that will only further depress values.

I should clarify my original statement somewhat...the players themselves are good, but hobby-wise we all know that these things rarely translate. Remember 08-09? For the longest time who was the hottest player out of that crop? A guy that's presently clinging to life as an NHL goalie in Columbus. Obviously Stamkos has risen to the point everybody expected him to reach, but it's stuff like that which I'm talking about. These guys may have made a nice first splash, but they're not likely to be players that hold a lasting hobby impact.

Unless they have a big following, or were a top prospect, players don't seem to sell as high as they "should". Look at Stamkos prices compared to Giroux, same class, both are top tier players and Giroux has a better hobby market.. yet Stamkos sells about double then Giroux for RC's. So even if Hodgson becomes a top tier player.. I don't seem him catching RNH in prices unless RNH becomes a bust. If they put up similar numbers, RNH will sell higher.. mainly because he was a top prospect

I think this year's lower prices are mostly due to it being the offseason right now, and not many rookies other than RNH, Landeskog, and Henrique getting all that much attention this year. Although I can definitely see this being a trend. I sense that UD is starting to slip and more people will start to prefer Panini. I know I would rather have a Calder Contenders Auto than a FWA, they look better and have shorter print runs. I won't be surprised if the prices for FWAs continue to slip as Contenders rise over the next couple years.

I disagree totally with Panini coming on. They are horrible in other sports. Hockey is their best stuff and I think it's because Topps isn't in the game (IMO better then both). Landeskog prices are not that good being a ROY, which is sad.

SP Authentic prices are still blowing away Contenders. I enjoy contenders too, but where is Panini's version of Series 1/2? The Cup>Dominion. Not taking anything away from Panini, they have done well in hockey.. but I don't seem them passing UD, but I am glad there is competition. But most people still prefer UD looking at sales. I just like whoever puts more of my PC out there... which is no one haha
