I think it's a great time to be buying Crosby. The fact is that he hasn't been in the news as much as he usually is (for his merits) and that has led to a fall-off in his value. The fact is though, that he is the face of the league. If you have some high-end ROOKIES of him, it's a great time to hold or buy. There is no player better than crosby currently in the league in terms of getting points but also getting fan attention.

I don't fear that once he plays well for a bit, his prices will come back up. The other aspect is that this is off-season price. Everything is about 15-25% cheaper than when the season is on.

If anyone thinks Crosby is done and needs to get rid of some rookies, I'm right here waiting.

One should also factor in the summer doldrum months when hockey card popularity decreases during the off-season...and there's lots of worry about a lock-out and the damper that will put on hockey card collecting. Then there's the economy that effects many collectors. So prices go down and the highest-priced cards go down the most. I think that's impacted Crosby prices along with other popular players. Having said that, I agree that more autographs coming out year after year dilute the prices of all players: increased supply fills demand and prices go down. As usual, the rookie year cards of the sought after players maintain their value or can increase in value, due to their special place in the hearts of most collectors; it's neat to hold a rookie card in your hand and imagine the promise the player had that year and review all his accomplishments since then. As well, cards keep coming out for a player every season but each player only has one rookie year.

On another note, I'm not ready to write off Crosby just yet...remember Gretzky who had his detractors for years, yet he's withstood the test of time and most people now see him as one of the best players in the game. There's still time for Crosby to do well and only time will tell (5 years? 10 years?) how his hockey career and reputation pan out.

That may very well be, but off season on eBay has never meant more cards, it's about 20,000 singles less, always has been.

Also people are severely overpaying for Ultimate 1/1 Shields. $3K for a Schiefle that will only be worth $500.00 in 6 months time? Madness.
