Police Shoot It Out With Gunman In The Quiet Oregon Town In Which I Live

Silverton, Oregon. Voted one of the Top 10 Towns in the USA among thousands compared. Clean, Safe (until yesterday) Friendly.

Police and the Mario County Sheriff's Department were given a verbal warning on Feb. 19th by the Owner of the local RV Park, that a former resident was delusional, and was making threats to the staff and residents of the RV park before he was asked to move out earlier in the year. They were also told that the man was in possession of Firearms and had permits to carry them, one of them concealed.

The man moved out of the RV Park without out incident earlier in the year, but returned yesterday and immediately began opening fire on residents and on RV's in the Parks. Local Police were joined by Marion County Deputies and returned fire on the man who at that point had moved to higher ground West of the park's property. During the incident, the Gunman shot the RV Park Manager on duty in the arm. The park manager is in stable condition in Hospital.

There have been several lunatics praising the RV Park's owner (whom I know) as being a hero by previously informing the Police and the Sheriff's Department that this guy was dangerous. The owner also told both local LE authorities that the man needed his weapons taken from him, as his threats appeared to be very real. The Gunman verbally informed residents that he thought he was in harms way, and that people were trying to harm him, or even kill him.

Before you start stereotyping, this is an RV Park, not a Mobile Home Park. There are a small number of Residents that make it an occasional Winter home, but not many as it's much more unaffordable than a Mobile Home Park. By and Large the place is uber clean, has standards above most RV Parks, and way above Mobile Home Park standards, and is actually within the town limits, about 3 blocks from the Fire Hall. There have never been incidents of rowdy behaviour because the place is well kept and, normally depends on seasonal business with people that have some cash. It's not cheap for an overnight and very expensive to live in semi-permanently. Residents are only allowed to stay a maximum of 8 months, then must move on. It's almost twice as cheap to rent a 3 Bedroom home in town than it is to live temporarily in this place. Expensive and Clean, and Safe with most residents being Seniors.
    .................................................. ........

Here is the kicker. The Gunman was reported to both levels of LE, last week as being armed and dangerous, and having mental problems. He WAS NOT living in the park at the time of this incident yesterday.

The Silverton Police and the Marion County Sheriff's Department DID NOT act on the advice of the RV park's owner who told them that this man needed to be found & his weapons taken from him, yet bloggers call the owner a hero? How does that work when the Police don't act? The reaction time to the incident was not quicker because they knew in advance.

People in blogs are saying it was so wise for the RV Park owner to give them a head's-up? So that LE could do NOTHING? The warning call from the RV Park owner was not heeded by either the Silverton Police Department or the Marion County Sheriff''s office. Marion County Sheriff's Dept. also encapsulates the Capital - Salem as well as a very large rural area, so it's not a Hillbilly County, it's large and well populated. Siverton is one of the most expensive towns to live in in Oregon because of the rating I listed at the top of the page. There are fewer towns in the USA as nice as this in which to live.

I am sickened by this non-action of LE, as one specific individual warns LE, and they don't bother to track this guy down, don't give the threat calls the time of day, but can't wait to greedily have a shootout with him instead.

None of you live here. Our local LE have a previous reputation of shoot first, and so does the Marion County Sheriff's Department. We have all been talking about action with unsettled people owning firearms, here is an example of LE knowing in advance and doing nothing about it. These coppers around here are adrenaline freaks, and so are the County Cops, they love to use their guns, rather than resolve things before they come to a head, and that is the danger here. Here is where the train leaves the tracks.

Just goes to show you. I have lived in 6 States in the USA, and 5 Provinces in Canada, & we finally chose this town in which to raise our Son due to the qualities it previously possessed and the opportunities for my Wife' career. Not anymore, it's really no different than any of the other 49 States of the OK CORRAL.

I can't even eat my breakfast. I do not come from a country with a culture of hand guns, so you really cannot understand how I feel about this unwanted, and uncalled for behaviour by both the disturbed gunman, and less than proactive Law Enforcement.

Before you start stereotyping, I live in a mobile home park. It is clean, respectable and not the "dirty old trailer parks" you seem to be referencing.

Some are, some aren't. All depends on the community. The Mobile Home Park in this town is not a nice place compared to others I've seen, and nowhere near the standard of the RV park where the incident takes place.

You live in a resort community, where standards are much higher, you live in a country where Mobile Home Parks standards are much higher. You also live in a country where Police would not have allowed that incident to happen yesterday, nor a man of this ilk to possess a firearm.

All these factors have to be considered. Also, this thread is not about you, or where you live.

I know it's not about me. There's no need to perpetuate the stereotype though. I actually live on a native reserve near a resort community. There are a fair number of stereotypical trailer parks, though the absolute worst is an RV park. Funny, that.
Mobile Home Communities are only as clean or dirty as the people in them. The homes have nothing to do with it. Don't think I'm making this about me. I'm only defending my home.

when I was a teen my friends parents owned a mobile home park right on the shores of lake erie, I worked there on and off and it was a nice place. there were two other mobile home parks in town and they weren't as nice, but they weren't bad. and there are no mobile home parks in Oberlin.

    None of you live here.

so, none of you live here

That was for people that want to compare a very nice RV Park to some most trashy Mobile Home parks. Many think they are all trash.
