A breakdown of Zac Rinaldo's recently-improved effectiveness
Here at Broad Street Hockey, there's been a lot of virtual ink spilled over Zac Rinaldo and his play since the beginning of last season, when he made the team out of training camp. And most of it's had a pretty consistent message: If Rinaldo wants to stick around as a contributing player on this team, he needs to calm down a bit a lot.

I thought the table spoke for itself. If he's creating more PPs for the team without hurting them, then he's being effective.

When did I say or imply that he was an offensive force? He's not. His job is to be an effective forechecker and to, if possible, create more PPs for his team than he does for the other team. So far this season, he has done that effectively.

i understand that, but what im saying here we have an article talking about how he is effective because he went from taking 16 penalty minutes to 4 minutes a game you are all of a sudden effective
im not saying rinaldo isnt good at his role, but lets not credit him as being some kind of star player

Again, at what point does this imply he's a star player? It's talking about a guy who was known for being a liability on the ice due to ill-times/undisciplined penalties who is now a good forechecker who has been creating (on average) 1 PP chance for his club over the last 10 games, while only taking 8 PIM himself.
No one is saying he's going to be a top-6 forward or ever score more than 6-8 goals a season. It's simply an article about a player who had 300+ PIM last year who existed basically to run around and try to fight people who's attempting to adjust his game to be a positive impact on his team. You might not like him and that's fine, you're allowed to not like him. But I think you're trying to take a story of a player who's trying to be a better player for his team and ripping him for it.

He's a punk, no way around it. I don't care that he has less PIM this season.
Now comes the obligatory "Oh, yer a pens fan, matt cooke is a POS." Yes, he is.

I was actually going to mention Cooke, but in a different way. Cooke got a well-deserved reputation as a dirty hitter, with the exclamation point being the hit on Savard. After that season, Cooke vowed to quit it and focus more on just being a hard-nosed hockey player, and to a large extent, he's done that. He's reformed his game and it's benefiting his team.
Rinaldo, although only in his second season, is trying to do the same, and I'm pretty sure that's what the article is implying; that he's trying to not be such a hot-head (unlike Carcillo) and actually be a positive force on his team. If all he does is piss off the other team and make them take stupid penalties, then I can see why fans of other teams won't like him, but he's helping the team win as opposed to being a detriment.
