Why do many Christians use a different objective standard to their religion?

Back when I was a christian, I clearly remember Sunday school lessons on other religions....the purpose of this was to show us why theirs was wrong and ours was right.

They would talk about Catholics, Mormons, Jews, Muslims among many others.

The funny thing was that the way they would look at these religions in the way many skeptics would look at them.....they're simply filled with nonsense.

For example the Mormons and the story of Joseph Smith....when I first heard that story, my first reaction was "People believe this story"?!?!

    HOW?!?!

It's so obvious that it's filled with things that can't possibly be true.

And yet at the same time I believed in the story of Noah, a talking snake, a man walking on water, and other things which also can't possibly be true.

It took many years before I finally objectively looked at my beliefs.

But I wonder, why didn't I do it back when I was mocking other religions that were different than mine?

Is it that our brains our wired to such a way that we block this type of reasoning? I wonder.

alex, i would say that from your posts and what I have read about your Christian experience, WHAT THE HECK KIND OF CHRISTIANS WERE YOU AROUND?

really, sunday school talked bad about other religions?

the answer to your thread is because a lot of people do it one way or another, but it is obviously flawed. whether it is pro lifers, pro death penalty groups, liberals, democrats, conservatives, gun owners, or what ever in-group, some will not be able to see the flaws in their own ideas just the flaws of others.

though I have my own reasons for not being a JW or Mormon, or Catholic, Buddhist, and such, they are my own reasons drawn from my own experiences, study, and research.

I personally respect anyone who is a true follower of their religion and I feel honored when I am allowed to be part of it in any way.

Catholicism was the first christian religion, based on that, it's closer to the original source than protestantism is.

Matin Luther only had problems with the Pope at the time. His behaviour is nothing more than splinter-group behaviour, and self-power. Protestantism was a huge problem for christianity, as it then allowed social, literary, and personal license to be allowed into the religion and told people that what was written was completely open to their own interpretation, as long is it followed No guidelines of common sense.

Martin Luther was a frigging loony, just a protestant one. christianity is no more suited to the protestant over all others, than it is to a parked donkey.

Shrew I think we have come to a point that we have 2 options here.1. Alex was never a christian he just is a very intelligent person who obtains what he reads and has come to carry on his crusade on a fun simple sports card trading site.OR 2. He was a very confused christian who did not obtain what he read and had confused teachings.

Your use of the Mormon religion is an interesting one. Usually when I try to objectively compare all religions, I can never seriously put the Mormon religion (along with scientology, etc.) in the discussion because it seemed to me so ridiculous. But when you look at the other religions in the same light, they're right on that level.

Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Scientology are all cults based on the original weird behaviour of each of their founders.

Scientology is not christian, Mormonism is not christian, unless you consider a salamander as a prophet. Jehovah's Witnesses, are purely a power cult. Those at the top taking gobs of money from the sheep, and making the least common sense rules to live by.

Really, all religions are cultist, some just unbelievably slightly more bizarre than others. They are all based on pie-in-the-sky bogey-men.

And JWs too. Was I supposed to be shocked and appalled?

And I'm just confused, since your title talks about all Christians and you talk about them not realizing others look the same way at them and mention Catholics in there, along with Mormons.

I'm just wondering what Christians you're talking about?

I never said that they talked "bad" about other religions, they would have lessons explaining what they believed and why it was false.

It's exactly what skeptical people do.

But isn't it amazing how Protestant christians can do that toward other religions and yet they don't look at their own beliefs?

I gotta admit I got a laugh out of this.

AJ, I was a devout Christian for the majority of my life, that's 100% truth.

And I'm just confused, since your title talks about all Christians and you talk about them not realizing others look the same way at them and mention Catholics in there, along with Mormons.

No, my title says MANY christians not all.

I'm just wondering what Christians you're talking about?

    American Protestant Christians....mostly evangelicals.
