Question About This 5 Pound Diamond Slab Card Holder - See Scan

    Hi All:

I have a number of cards that I am selling for an older friend. He shows up at my house with 5 huge Tupperware boxes full of cards and a number of these HUGE, heavy card slabs below.

Dimensions are 3 x 7 and One Inch Thick.

    1. What is the exact name?
    2. What do they weigh? Heavy as lead
    3. What do they cost NEW ?
    4. Does anybody in the collecting world use them?

Now, this is not my first Rodeo, I've been doing cards for 50 years, but in Canada, I've used Top-Loaders, the odd plastic case and the current One touch holders. But this thing is the size of a House. Lol. I have seen these before but have no idea why anybody would put a card inside one. I'm not feeling the love here. What Gives with these monstrosities?

Here is the scan below. Just click on it to enlarge. I have put a cheap Yzerman card inside to show the size. Naturally the card is blurry as it's a half a mile inside the idiotic slab. Lol

Any assistance would help. I will be trying to move these of trade them, or sell them if anyone would want any. Probably have 10-12 of them.

    Cheers!

    Tim

Oh wow I remember seeing a couple of these back in the 1990's - I think a flea market seller had a few cards (Roy Pro Set The Mask, Hull RC, etc.) in there to show the *really* important cards. LOL

I can see them having some use for the Tall Boys cards, but beyond that it's just a clunker to lug around.
    To answer the questions:

    1. What is the exact name? -- Big Honkin' Screwdown
    2. What do they weigh? Heavy as lead -- 'bout that, probably need a scale
    3. What do they cost NEW ? -- I would think 3-4 bucks, can check at my LCS next time I'm in there.
    4. Does anybody in the collecting world use them? -- Beyond vintage/Tall Boys collectors, very limited market

That, sir, is the Ultra-Pro 1" Lucite Screw-Down, the most magnificent card holder in the history of all mankind!! The Truck-O-Saurus of card storage devices!!! I found them currently on Amazon for $10.29 CDN, the one I have I bought at a sports jersey store for seven bucks from the clearance bin a few years ago. I had a Gordie Howe auto in it for a while til I ran out of room, now it sits........waiting.............

They are from $8.00 use and $12.00-$15.00 new on eBay. Why on Earth? it will cost a fortune to ship these outside the USA.

lucite slabs was the name I think they used in the day, cost was about 10 and you can still get them for about that price now, just shop around

The issue I had and have heard others say about them was that the card was placed between the slabs and them you screwed it down, the problem is that over time if you removed the card it would start to curve from the pressure, also if you over tightened it, the corners would crush
and if you under tightened, the card would move around over time and could fall out

Toploaders are the best bet to use or 1 touch based on size of the card.

The screwdowns I had from the 90's all had a bevel on the top half that the card sits in, there's no pressure on the card at all.

Those ruin cards as they are larger than the card. Eventually the corners get destroyed.

I never had a problem with using them for displaying cards or storing them. I suppose if you were hauling around a ton of them to a show or something they might gum up the corners.
