Database for damaged cards?
Wondering if anyone else thought of this, keeping track of damaged (mainly lower numbered) cards. I say lower numbered cause it obviously won't matter if a YG of some random 4th liner gets ruined, thousands of others out there. Kinda similar to The Cup RC tracker that a member has on photobucket.
For example, I have a 08-09 Paul/Peter Stastny Artifacts Tundra Tandems Gold /25 that had a decent crease in it, so I ripped the card in half cause I was interested in the jersey pieces. Still have both halves of the card, but you can safely say there's 24 of these now. Would be interesting to know in case you have a copy of something that was damaged, makes it that much more scarce if it's a low numbered cardLast edited by jagrnyr68; 08-06-2013 at 09:24 PM.

Who would be interested in about 10 years of data entry, then 16 hours per day trying to track down collectors that have already thrown out card under they assumption that they might have known the serial number of the card.
Why bother?
If a card is in a collection, and it's low, you are never going to find out who has that card anyway. A full 50% of all Hockey Card collectors don't trade, don't visit websites like this, or go anywhere near eBay.

I can't wait until I'm old enough to have a negative opinion of everything that has ever and could ever possibly exist.

I don't see the point of such a thing, but if it floats your boat...
I barely have enough hours in the day to keep a database of the cards I own and care about, let alone entertaining the notion of compiling a compendium of damaged cards that I don't.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I might be wrong, but don't most damaged low-numbered cards wind up back at UD or Panini for replacements??
I had a dinged Joe Vitale RC auto /25, I threw it out. My "database" is a Glad-Bag, sorry!

I thought so too, but when I sent the Stastny Tundra Tandems to get replaced, they sent it back to me with the replacement for it. I thought it was pretty odd
RGM81 - it wouldn't be one member collecting data for everything, that'd be outrageous. More just anyone posting if they had a card that was damaged and not going to be in existence anymore. A slightly extreme case, but somehow a card /5 gets damaged and the collector decides to toss it....personally if I had a copy of that card, I wouldn't mind knowing that there's only 4 of that card out there now, especially if it was part of my PC.
Just throwing an idea out there and my thought process behind it, guess it wouldn't be that popularLast edited by jagrnyr68; 08-07-2013 at 12:22 AM.

I understand where you're coming from. Low numbered cards are already hard to come buy (something with only 25 copies, and is more than a couple of years old.... it can be very tough).
Know that 1 or 2 (whatever?) have been damaged / destroyed would be useful information, for sure.
I think it'd be very impractical though, and for a few reasons:
Who would maintain / host such a list? The card companies would (IMO) have ZERO interest in doing something like that. Why? Becuase it would mean there would be a published list of many of the cards they've messed up on. A site like SCF (or any other hobby site) would be able to get a decent sized list going, I'm sure, but when you consider what a small fraction of the hobby usues sites in general - or any single site in particular - you wouldn't get anywhere near a complete list.... though I suppose "some information" is, in theory, better than none.
I would assume a list like this would be done through user generated content..... i.e. you add your damaged card to a list (or submit a form, whatever) rather than someone actually maintaining such a list manually. Regardless, how do you verify the information? If I tell you that I sent my damaged card back to UD for replacement, how do I prove that? I took a scan of the damaged card first? EASY to fake. Even if it was damaged, who is to say I sent it back to UD? What if I get 3 friends, over the course of 3 or 4 months, to each submit a claim that they had "Card X" that was /10 damaged, and replaced?? Meanwhile I'm holding onto another copy of it - and now claim that it's out of 7.... as a means to justify a raise in price?
Not trying to shoot the notion down, I just think there would be a TON Of work involved in something like this, and it doesn't really offer a whole lot of value - becuase you could never maintain a list that is even close to complete, or reliable.

I like the idea, don't think the OP was implying anyone in particular here would actually do the task! A programmer would need to make a template of all cards, say /25 or less, than one simply inputs what card they have, plus whatever ones they know are damaged, ie I have a Selanne gold jersey/25, plus one that was ruined in the mail so I tossed in the garbage...So someone looking for that card now knows there are only 23 available and so it goes...as with any new idea, anyone can find issue with it, like not everyone in the hobby knows about SCF, BUT, if this forum hosted the simple data base..word would spread to hardcore chaser's and it would be one more reason SCF would be the #1 Go to site...just my 2 cts...(actualy doesn't SCF's inventory already have the template, just add cards you know as damaged or lost and put U/A beside it; unavailable. )
