This is a sample of the message that I typically send if the individual's e-mail address is given:
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to read this message. Over the years, I have been a big fan.
At your convenience, I would really appreciate an autographed picture. Thank you so much.
My Name
My Street Address
My City, My State My Zip code
Please excuse me if this is a duplicate request. My records are not as accurate as I would like them to be.
I typically add "of ..." after "a big fan" if I'm sending to an agent or a corporate e-mail address.
Wikipedia is a good place to start. You can also use Google, bearing in mind that you will need to distinguish between "official" web sites (which the celebrity typically manages) and "fan" sites (which they typically do not).
Many web sites have contact information, either in the form of e-mail addresses or contact boxes. Some are harder to figure out than others, however, and some only list mailing addresses.
In addition, if you start following celebrities on Twitter, some of them list links to their official websites, at which point you can follow the above procedures.
As you may have already determined, the best database for sports is:
https://www.sportscardforum.com/ttm.php?sp=4&do=listr
Once you register with them, you can also keep track of everything that you've gotten.
The best information for non-sports is:
http://www.fanmail.biz/mboard/viewforum.php?f=2
You may have to ignore a lot of dumb postings, but I've gotten some good information from it (it's just information though - you can't store any results there).
These are individual collectors' web sites (there are a lot of them out there, but most only post pictures and act like they have secrets that they won't reveal - these three actually post addresses and links):
http://a-autographs.jimdo.com/
http://celebritiesblogleo.blogspot.ru/ (he's Russian)
http://celebrityautographs.nl/ (he's Dutch)
In sorting through the chronology, it seems like they poach some of the information from sites that I've posted on, but don't necessarily leave their own results (they choose to brag on their own sites). That's why I try to check their sites about once a month.
Anyway, just to whet your appetite a bit, these are some of the more noteworthy successes that I've had:
Football - Tony Dungy, Troy Aikman, Y.A. Tittle
Hockey - Mike Eruzione
Basketball - John Calipari, Jim Calhoun, Steve Alford, Mike Krzyzewski, Tom Izzo, Rick Pitino
Racing - Jeff Andretti, Darrell Wallace, Jr.
Golf - Annika Sorenstam, Greg Norman, Ernie Els, Gary Player, Ben Crenshaw
Soccer - Franz Beckenbauer
Other Sports - Peggy Fleming, Nastia Liukin, Kim Clijsters, Usain Bolt, Kristi Yamaguchi, Nadia Comaneci, Maria Sharapova
Non Sport - Charlie Daniels, Tony Blair, George Jones, John Sebastian, Lance Burton, Paula Deen, Gretchen WIlson, Florence Larue, Vanna White, Barbara Mandrell, Leslie Uggams, Laraine Newman
That's a small sampling of the more well- known names. Try not to get too addicted!

Here is another site to find college sports official pages:
http://ncaaautographs.com/addresses.asp
Only copy the team name into another window. When you get into team site look for staff directory. Many coaches do send signed photos out. Should it not list an email for the coach you want send the request via the admin assistant for that department. Basketball men and womans coaches sign great, many big name college football coaches sign great, and I have found former Olympians who coach a college sport now that have signed great as well!

Be polite and be honest in your requests. You will be shocked at how cool some celebrities are with their fans. You will have a much lower success rate with email requests than on TTM requests and become familiar with what is a real autograph and what is a preprint. Places will tell you to send to studio fan mail for instance for huge name celebs. Anything from there is just a copy of a photo that was signed and your item was never signed or touched by the celeb at all! Like any hobby I will say have fun with it and collect what you like. The most fun I have had in autograph collecting is when I work on a project. Maybe I attempted auto racers this month or former Olympians. Hope that helped?
