Emery would be given some leeway, except for his past behaviour. Also if you watch the replay, the pathetic referee has already grabbed him and is explicitly telling him "NO".

That is the suspendible behaviour right there. The fact that the pathetic ref is milquetoast, and cowers away instead of physically trying to stop it, was all the impetus that Emery needed.

Emery has a bad attitude, that he promised the league was corrected, similar to that of Matt Cooke. The difference, Matt Cooked has lived and played by his promise to change, Emery obviously has not.

He needs the largest fine handed down, about a 10-12 game suspension without pay, and see how he likes them apples. Also this is easily his 3rd or 4th Strike, one more, and out of the league.

It looks as though there is a caveat in the NHL Rule book that states that a suspension may be implemented even though an exact incident of this type is Not on the books.

I believe that supplementary discipline can still be handed down on a special case by case basis, which is what this specific case needs.

Hey, I humbly accept that. Clearly I've blown this out of proportion in my poor emotional state today. Sorry everyone, and to cygnus specifically.

I still hate Ray Emery, but my previous experiences having been bullied should not effect me the way they apparently do many years later. I can't even say I've endured anything half as bad as what cygnus wrote about above. That is truly terrible.

Hey no worries, totally understandable. As I said before, bullying in general is an awful thing and is never to be tolerated. Despite what's happened to me I tend to keep a pretty positive outlook, so if you ever need anything feel free to shoot me a message!

I was a fan of Emery's when he was in Ottawa, despite the poor decisions he made. I was genuinely happy for him when he was able to resurrect his career, as his injury was very close to career-threatening. He truly seemed to have turned a corner up until this fight. It very well could be that his emotions got the best of him, as does happen with many players, But until he can really prove this was an aberration, it will be pretty difficult to cheer for him.

That is exactly the reason that I took him as a late round addition in my pool. Imagine my utter disappointment that the Flyers are still as bad as they were last year and it really wasn't Bryzgalov's fault.

1 - It is not a referees job to intervene on fights. That is the job of the linesman.
2 - When breaking up a fight, your own safety is priority 1. They are willing combatants, you are forced into the situation.
3 - To compliment #2, it is not recommended that one try and stop a fight by himself. Always have a partner, for your safety and the players' as well.

Honest question, did you ever ref?

I played Junior and refereed for 3 years, CAHA Midget, in the 70's, and again in the NHL at various places. (No Hit League).

When there are 4 brawls on the ice, and now an extra referee, he should be doing all he can to stop things, especially in a non-agreed to beatdown like that.

You and I disagree, move on

As much as I do not like what Emery did he did nothing to warrant a suspension under the rules.

Centreice A goalie only gets a penalty for playing the puck on the other side of centre not skating past centre

Emery will get his one day just like Hextall got his from Potvin he will pick on the wrong goalie
