Just accept that you are obsessed with cards and that you have a problem. Do you really need a case of SP Authentic? It really only makes sense if you are putting together the set. Just do a box or two and take your time.

i like your approach to it. Maybe instead of cases all the time just a box or two to feed the addiction. Kind of like a smoker that uses a nicotine patch. I need to scale it back or just try cold turkey. That will have to start today as I bought a couple bowman baseball cases yesterday. I just need my collecting to be more focused instead of all over the place. I like football, baseball, & hockey cards. Does anyone else have an addiction to wax on here?

Everyone does bro. Some of us just know how to hide it. As for the Bowman cases, why did you do it? Are you looking for a certain card? Are you building the set? Are you just playing the lottery? Think about your motivation and it will be helpful going forward. Also, I know for me, setting a budget doesn't work. There will always be great reasons to break the budget or excuses to cut back next month etc.

Is money an issue? If so, boxes, not cases. If not, then don't worry about it. We all have vices, this one doesn't hurt you. I smoke, drink and eat junk food. All far worse than opening packs of cards. If you can afford it, go nuts. Makes all the singles available for me.

To me I just think that a few things come into play here.
First off what are your finances like? I am not asking you to post them here as it is none of our business. If you are a wealthy person who is financially set and can afford buying cases of cards then by all means go for it. If you do not fit all of that criteria then I would not suggest buying case after case.
Secondly if you are doing it to make a profit then I would bet that you lose the majority of the time. Yes buying a case is a lot safer financially than buying a single box. With a case you will get the case hit and with a box you can get a real dud.
If you must open a case of SP Authentic then maybe just buy the case and open one box a day. At least you will feed your addiction for 12 days as opposed to a one day high.
Now with that being said their is nothing wrong with opening a box here and there for a lot of people. I will use golf as my comparison. Green fees $50 (minimum) at least where I live, electric cart (I am lazy) $20, round of drinks $20, lunch $20, golf balls and tees $5-10. After all is said and done that round cost me $115-120 and I will have nothing to show for it. If I buy a box of cards at least I have something in my hands when everything is all said and done.
I tend to buy a box of just about every new release myself. When the product is just out the cards are always hot. You can sell them on eBay for top dollar or will have player collectors knocking on your door to trade with to knock cards off of their lists. If I hit a really nice card that will cover another box (usually the case hit) and I sell it I will buy another box. I feel as if I am playing with house money that way.

reasons for the bowman cases:
I love prospecting and reading my prospect handbook of 2014 to see and learn who the prospects I pull are.
Bowman and bowman chrome are easy to grade. I would like to send some to PSA as they have a monthly special of $6 per card.
I want to put together some of the sets. Chrome & paper sets, prospect top 100.
I like the on card autos from bowman chrome and would like a chance at a Mookie Betts, Kris Bryant, or Jose Abreu.
chance of a major hit like an auto /5 or super refractor.
it is just fun to look through all of the parallels and cards.
Some cards will be traded on here or sold on the bay

Hello
I love busting wax. I know there's a good chance that my box not be what I want, but all it takes is that one hit to go back for more. Its like me golfing, I am not so good but I get that one hole where everything works, and I am ready for another 18 holes. All the cards for trade or sale were busted open by another collector why can't it be my box

habscards, nice post. I like your reasons for it. My financial situation is stable. I will not really delve into details but the wax I buy does not affect my wife and I in a negative manner. That front is fine but I simply love the thrill. When I have a bad box I really am not that upset. I appreciate the cards I pulled and look to sort them in their respective boxes. I sort all players and teams alphabetically so they are in order. I use turbo lister to put on the bay cards I do not want. I put sets together as well. I actually enjoy base cards. I look through my base cards when I break at the photography and stats. With all of this being said, my wax addiction started last August at the National. Before this I bought solely singles for the prior 15 years. As I walked around the National I could not find many cards for fair prices or for what I needed for my PC.
I went over to blowouts booth and started buying boxes and ripping them in my hotel room or at the show. I had an absolute blast. Did I lose money on it, yes. I look at it like how you said you like to golf. I open the boxes and have some enjoyment and then have at least some cards to keep even if I am down on my original investment. For me it is not about the money but the hobby. I love sports and am impressed by this board and have fallen in love with the NHL.

I do fully understand when you say that you were at a show and could not find singles for a good price. You have to remember that to set up a table at a show costs money. To set up at a big show costs a lot of money. Thus they have to charge more than eBay going rate to make money. Yes I am sure that there are deals to be made but they are very hard to find if you are looking for a specific player or set. That is why when I go to a show I just love to look for deals to be had and open your search to everything. It makes it for the thrill of the chase and is a lot of fun. Plus you can get some really good deals if you are willing to dig through a box of cards marked $20 each or three for $50. You would be surprised how often you can find a $30-40 card in there. Plus if you find a bunch that you like you should be able to get a little better of a deal. You could get like seven cards for $100 and you should be able to double your money. Maybe I sound like an annoying card flipper but they marked the price and what I just bought for $100 is what a box would have cost me and unless I hit that case hit I collectively have better cards than what most boxes would have yielded.
With that being said I have no problems with people who open cases/boxes. I have a one and a half year old son. My wife and myself both work in a hospital (neither of us are a doctor or a nurse) I am a Porter in the Emergency department and my wife is a secratery. We just bought a brand new car last year and still have six more years of car payments. We also have had a house for five years and have a mortgage to pay off. We are not quite living pay check to pay check but we are far from living the dream. I am sure that I could buy a box of cards every two weeks on payday but I prefer to put that into a savings account for future schooling for my son. College/Unniversity is expensive now and just think what it will be like in another seventeen years. If you look at my traders (the link is in my sig) I have some decent cards in there. I have done that by making smart decisions on what singles to buy. If I want to buy a box I have to do it bg selling cards in my collection to fund my box purchases. That also brings a lot of fun into it for me. You are selling your cards with a goal in sight.
One other thing that we all forget is that we should people like you. A lot of people on here and other sites and eBay are specific player collectors and just go for singles of who they PC. For them to be able to buy singles someone has to open a case or box or even packs yo pull that card and have it available to go on the market.

nice post habscards. I think I have been given a lot of advice on why the thrill of breaks is so fun. I will only hope to continue to break but not let it get out of control.
