    Centering question

I just bought a Tavares The Cup /91 rookie on ebay. The card was in a case in the picture and the glare kinda obscured the centering and another minor flaw on the card. I just got the card today and the centering seems off quite a bit. What kind of effect do you think this has on the value of a card? I bought for 450 and asked for a partial refund of 50. Do you think this is fair?

I don't know what the other minor flaw on the card is but the description does say NM-MT condition OR BETTER!! so you would have to have something pretty bad for it to not hit that. Also I can't really tell what the centering is but it doesn't look too extreme either.

I must be missing something...seems like you aren't due any refunded back based on the pic. Post up some close ups of the problems. As far as centering...you know that that year those were printed in funky angles, odd window shapes, etc....

Sorry I can't shrink the pictures. Here is the one that I bought:

Here is the crease on the patch window

Compare the centering on that card to this other one.

Wow the centering is aweful on that card ...... ive seen about 10 of the /91s in person .... and none were this bad.

IMO, the centering problem is on you. You can easily see the problem from the pic the seller used, especially when you have another version to go on. An easy trick is to look at these auctions from a smartphone or ipad. Some pics on ebay allow you to blow up the card, but I find a really good phone / ipad can blow things up really well. I just did on my phone and took a look at that top left corner ... and its pretty noticable that the card is not centered well.

I would however ask about the crease near the patch window. That is pretty hard if not almost impossible to pick up with the scan the seller provided, and I would chalk that up to a major flaw. This should have been mentioned in the thread, and may even make the sellers "NM-MT condition OR BETTER" comment untrue. Im not very knowledgeable on the whole grading process, and everything I have graded was purchases graded, but is NM-MT an 8.0? 8.5? With the centering the way it is, and that crease .... it doesnt matter how sharp the edges and corners are ..... especially with the centering maybe getting a 7 or lower? The card cannot make a comeback in other categories enough to make it NM-MT ( now if I only knew what grade NM-MT was =P )

Not only does the crease near the window lower the value of the card, but it raises other questions you dont want around your purchase. Crease near window = altered patch? If people think this is an altered card, that $50 refund doesnt come close to the amount you will lose in value ( unless you can find proof (video maybe) of the exact card being pulled ).

Yeah with that centering and crease I don't see how it is NM-MT condition OR BETTER
