13/14 Team Contenders box worth a buy for fun?

Hey guys! So I recently sold a virtual card to someone (Stars Wars: App Trader on iOS) for $100. I am looking to use that money and buy a box of physical cards just to open for fun and keep them in a binder or something for the future.

I've been searching around and the Team Contenders box intrigues me. I saw some box breaks on Youtube and I feel pretty good about the contents inside. I know it's not worth a lot, but an average of 4 auto's seems good to me. I'm not really looking to sell the cards anyways. Do you think this is a good box for a beginner collector like me? What else would you recommend with a $100 price range? I'm not looking for the ones that have only 5 cards in a box though.

This is just for fun, as I am not an avid collector. The last hockey box I bought was $25 from Wal-Mart and didn't really pull anything.

    Thanks!

Just a suggestion, depending on what you like, I'd grab an assortment of different boxes for the same price. For example Dave and Adams has a Select/Titanium Combo (2 boxes) for like $80 and you end up with like 9 hits or something plus any extra RC's you pull. Could find some different product at a cheaper price point

Honestly, I would go for two boxes of 13-14 Prizm. You will get tons of nice cards and just as many autographs and it may actually be a little bit cheaper. It really all depends on what you're after. I can't really comment on the quality of Contenders since I didn't open any, but from what I've seen it seems pretty solid too.

Wow, that does seem pretty solid! Unfortunately, I forgot to state that I'm in Canada. I calculated the shipping and it will cost me $38. Wish I lived in the U.S. sometimes. Thanks for the recommendation.

That seems pretty sweet too. My last box of cards from Wal-Mart were PRIZM. They are indeed nice cards, but I think I may want to try to look for something else to collect. Thanks for your recommendation.

I think 13-14 Contenders is a good choice!
Hard signed autos for the most part, beautiful Rookie Auto Patches, and those multi player autos are nice too!
Can't go wrong if you hit a hot box and get 8 autos as well!

    Good luck!

Thanks, but I think those are too high-end for me. Also, I'm looking for more cards in the box!

Awesome, thanks for the input! It's probably the box I'm going to go with. I'll most likely buy it on Friday! But I really appreciate all the options you guys give me.

A virtual card sold for $100... sometimes I think this world has based me by and I am only in my 40s. anyway...

I like 13/14 Contenders. Every box of cards is an adventure, but I think it is a fun break and it has potential for some really nice stuff, even if it's not big names.

I like 13/14 Prizm a lot too. Two autos per box. I've had some dud boxes though. The saving graces are if you want to collect the base (which are really sharp), there are a lot of rookies to collect (1 per hobby pack, I think) and there are some really nice inserts too, like Immortalized.

One product not mentioned is 13/14 Rookie Anthology, which acts kind of like a 'Best Of' for Panini. I only opened one box and I was very happy with it. The problem is that cost-wise, it's on par with Contenders and when it came time to choose between the two, I like the collectible nature of Contenders more.

I was going to mention anthology as well but because the Canadian distributors are sold out (what my lcs told me) the price has gone up quite a bit. It is a fun break with all the variety but the collectibility isn't as high as contenders would be.

Man, you don't even know how insane people are with the virtual cards from Topps. The card I sold is well sought because it was one of the first released insert on the app, and people who have the card are anal about trading it...they literally want your whole collection of virtual cards for it haha. Though, the app is aimed to the older generation of folks who are similar to your age. I guess that's why they have so much money to burn on their hobbies.

They are VIRTUAL cards that are WORTHLESS in less than a year when they update the app to a newer version. Plus, they are not even physical, I don't see the point of wasting fortunes on them. You know TOPPS have this VIP thing each month where the top spenders get like free virtual cards limited to like 10. Guess how much top VIP's spend? $3000 a month. It's surprising that $500 a month won't get you VIP status. Crazy huh? All the money spent on VIRTUAL cards. If you have time, you should check out the apps on Android or iPhone. Just search "Topps trading game" and you'll see Topps BUNT (baseball), Topps KICK (soccer), and Topps Star Wars. I have been playing BUNT and KICK for 2 years and I haven't spent a cent on it. I just open packs when they give out free coins each day. Not to mention, $1.19 gets you 10,000 coins...which is only 1 or 2 packs depending how much they set the price to (usually 5,000; 7,500, to 10,000 coins a pack). They only give you 5 cards with a chance of pulling an insert. Some odds are insane like 1:100 for special inserts, but mainly odds are 1:20 for cards in a set...just think how many packs you need to open to get those odds. But they release inserts everyday on the apps to get users to buy coins and get more activity by having them trade each other....VIRTUALLY. I'd much rather spend money on physical cards.

By the way, this is the card I sold: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Topps-Star-Wars-Card-Trader-Widevision-Help-Me-Obi-Wan-Kenobi-Digital-Card-/191578998055?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c9aff 8527

You can see the guy listed it for bids. The card usually goes for $85-$100 price range at the end of the bid. Luckily, I sold mine straight up for $100 within a week. One virtual card limited to the card count of 1,500. Insane right?

Anyways, thanks for sharing your experience with the boxes. I guess Contenders is the right box for someone like me. I just want a good time cracking some cards and have some autographs.

I just did research on the Anthology box and it's $25 more than Contenders - based on my local hobby shop price. I'm sure it's a nice set, but maybe too much if the value of the cards are slightly higher then contenders. But then again, I'm not really keen on selling the cards anyway.

    Sweet, thanks guys
