Rumoured Stamkos Offer + No Trade During Season
I'm watching the Kings-Devils game, and during the 2nd intermission the MSG analyst says that the rumoured offer from Tampa Bay to Stamkos is 7 years, $7.5M per season.
If there's any shred of validity to this, it's no wonder that Stamkos hasn't re-signed. That is a major lowball offer for a player of his calibre just entering the uber-prime years of his career. On the open UFA market, he'll get offers north of $10M per season, easily.
Also, they were speculating about some things last night on Hockey Night in Canada...

Money is a funny thing.
We all know that these guys are earning more money than they can spend in a lifetime (unless they get into really big business, or are crazy). There's often lots of talk of tax brackets, meaning "why would you play in Toronto, instead of Florida, for the same money?" lower taxes = more income.
I don't think the actual take home pay is what's really driving them, but more along the lines of "I'm a top 5 player in this league, so I should be one of the five highest paid players in the league"
Stamkos is going to get 12, or maybe more, on the open market. If Tampa is really capping what they'll pay him at 7.5, or even a bit higher (8? 9?) there is no way he'll stay.

Can't say I blame Tampa Bay for the offer. Why should a guy get paid top 5 player money when he's nowhere near there? Aside from goals, Stamkos doesn't contribute much. He's currently 38th in league scoring (behind quite a few younger players, which I'm sure Yzerman is looking at), his career-best plus-minus for a season is +9, and he doesn't particularly excel at faceoffs. Not to mention, he's not even always on the top line for his team, something that should be a must, IMO, if you're getting that much money.

Elliotte Friedman had reported earlier that Tampa had offered an 8 year, $68 million contract. Tampa is the only team that can offer him an 8 year contract.
I don't see anyone offering him $12m/year especially with the cap possibly going down.

^^
It's a starting point. I'm sure Tampa will go higher and Stamkos will drop his demands lower.

But Stamkos doesn't look too bad in a Habs jersey ...

I still think a Maple Leafs on would look a little better though
Crazy to see what TB has offered him, will be interesting to see what the final dollar amount will be.Jhonas Enroth Card Collector & Host of the Hidden Content

Update: Stamkos will not be traded during the season.

As it should be. But it's going to make things very interesting in the weeks leading up to July 1 if he hasn't signed by then.

So it won't be before the trade deadline and I think Yzerman is mishandling this. First of all he has an unhappy superstar in his dressing room for the rest of the season and then what. Does he honestly believe that they can then find common ground before the free agent frenzy? If he can't sign him then what minor piece will he get in return for the negotiating rights? Between this and the whole Drouin saga I am beginning to doubt Yzerman's abilities as a GM.
