Possible Idea for UD
I have just been thinking and I think a big problem with cards today is how often players change teams. Like who wants a James Neal card in a pens uniform? Just an example as Im a Pens fan/collector. I have no interest in Kessel Maple Leaf cards. Only Kessel I want are his Rookies and I don't really want those cause they are Boston.
So my idea is that UD makes update Rookies. So I will use SP Authentic as I think it works best. Instead of /999 make /100 or /50 that way it doesn't take away value of the original. Either use the design of their rookie year or just use the current FWA design for 15-16. I don't know how hard it would be for UD to go back and get the old design. Take some of the better players that have changed teams and update the FWAs. I think they could be popular and nice hits.
Seguin and Kessel are 2 names that quickly come to mind.
Just an idea as I have only picked up 1 Kessel and that's his FWA. If there were updates of his other rookies I would definitely pick them up.Flickr: Hidden Content

I think there's been lots of cases where a particular design of rookie cards was reused for players that were not in that set. I guess this wouldn't be a whole lot different. Topps did one back in the early 00s where it made "pre-Rookie Cards" of players who would have qualified for a RC but didn't get one until later (i.e. guys like Modano & Belfour got cards using the 89-90 Topps design).
I think what you're suggesting might make for an interesting insert set. If you used SP Authentic as an example, create a 25 or 50 card set (whatever the number) of players who meet this criteria:
Have an SPA RC, but not pictured with their current team
Then copy that same design (means that there will be different designs throughout the set) but use an up-to-date photo (with the new team).
I don't think this is going to do anything to dig at the value of the actual RCs, because they wouldn't be RCs, but since Rookies are the thing that many people seem obsessed over, why not add something like this in? Might be a popular set. I'd be interested in seeing what they come up with.

That might be fun. I like seeing old designs coming back.

I wish UD would do something like this unfortunately its just wishful thinking on my part. Maybe make them like case hits or something (1 update FWA per Case).
Basically UD did this with some YGs. Anthony Duclair comes to mind with one as a NYR in S1 and one as a Coyote in SPA as an update or XRC. I would be interested if they did for say YG, SPX, Hot Prospects, SPA, Maybe even Ultimate and CUP.

That's a pretty cool concept.
It might do something to help counter the drop you always see in a guy's rookie cards when they get traded to another team. How many Senators fans will want a Dion Phaneuf rookie when he's two teams removed? Same goes for guys like Kessel in Pittsburgh, and many others out there.
If I had the chance to get a Jeff Petry that would be awesome...because I just looked it up on Inventory and he actually has ZERO Upper Deck RC's!! He was a relatively late debut (just like Dale Weise) in 10-11 (NHL debut on December 28th) and so he only has 4 Panini PC's with the best being a Dominion auto RC /199. We know he's going to be in Montreal for the long haul with that contract of his so something like that would be perfect for him.
Of course, people are gonna get real tired of a new Lee Stempniak "Back to the Future Watch" every year because the poor guy keeps getting dealt at the deadline every year.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I wonder if what should happen is some of the RC are more... general. Take team Canada RC for instance (from the mid to late 90's). Nobody complains about a Joe Thornton RC from team Canada as this was always collectible no matter where he went. I would go so far as to say that a Boston RC of Big Joe would fetch less (all things being equal) than a team Canada one. But then we are back to 16 year olds having RC, non action shots (worse than the bonus Lindros cards of 1990/91 score).
In today's trade crazy, no team loyalty (going both ways) NHL, is there room for a franchise player any more? (like Crosby, Malkin, the Sedins, PK Subban (so far), Price, etc)

Good Point with the guys who never had many RCs. Personally I would like to keep the design of their rookie year cards and just update the picture. Kessel 06-07 FWA /100 or /50 Pictured as a Pen, Seguin 10-11 Pictured as a Star, 05-06 Phaneuf as a Senator. I wouldn't mind it for a majority of their RCs.

That's also an interesting thing to think about. Myself I wouldn't really want my Sid and Fleury Rcs pictured in a Team Canada Uniform. Im not Canadian and as a team collector that doesn't really interest me. In the long run though I think they would be more desirable. I do like the idea maybe 1 or 2 sets pictured in their Home Country Uniform.
