Thoughts On 2015-16 SPX

SPx every year looks really nice until SP Authentic comes out and then you remember why SPx is the red-headed step-child of the SP family.

SPx looks good in person this year, as does Trilogy. I've been actually surprised by how nice they look.

The value is not there because there are WAY too many rookies of players who are not going to make it in the NHL. I can 100% understand why Upper Deck Series 1 and 2 would have every rookie that year, because its nice to have every player in the NHL ever to be documented on a hockey card. I understand why SP Authentic doing the same, only as an autographed version of rookie documentation.

As the season progresses there are certainly a lot of those players that most people know are never going to go far in the NHL. So why have so many of those rookies in over and over again in every single release. And then why would people pay $200 a box for such a small or minute chance of hitting a good rookie? There are too many sets like this and that is the problem.

I love busting boxes for the thrill. It IS like an addiction. Since I only collect Red Wings rookies theres not much of a point in busting Upper Deck. If I dont hit a Wing I typically re-sell. Since that would happen 9x of 10 I would lose way too much money. That is why I typically don't bust Upper Deck and stick to ITG or Leaf, because I actually put some of those sets together so every box has something I want.

We all bust and collect for different reasons. SPx looks awesome. Not much value. Fortunately SPx has been around a while so the nicer hits in the product can be highly sought after.

I think this entire notion of hitting a big rookie being impossible in SPX is highly inaccurate to say the least. I saw a box opened at my LCS yesterday and the guy hit a mcDavid redemption and i hit a mcdavid quad jersey from my 1 box. so where is this idea that it's impossible to hit the big rookies in spx coming from? there are several decent selling cards in spx such as larkin, fabbri, panarin and the vet autos include lemieux, ovie and others. sure they are case hits but what product is it easy to hit the better cards? none.

the design of the rookie jersey autos is absolutely stunning and they look a lot better in person. i really like the shadow box effect and the autos almost look on card. the design of the inserts is typical spx and very well done and the only slight problem with spx is resale value. my simple solution is then collect for the love of the hobby and not just making a fast buck on everything you buy.

Because for every Petr Kalus or Alexander Nikulin, there's a Jonathan Quick out there. Not everybody is going to develop into an elite player immediately.

seen a few showcase breaks today and i would easily have to say this product is far more mcdavid or bust than spx is. 3 hits per box and one numbered card looks like and just as many no named rookies and just as impossible to hit a vet auto. design on the hits is very nice but the base is very bland. i am an auto patch fan but i have seen a few 1 colors but that's true for any product such as this. so again why the hate on spx when the sell value per box for most boxes is bad???

I don't think any product out there is going to beat Black Diamond as far as ease of landing a McDavid goes. Not necessarily the rookie, but ANY McDavid card. Most cases I saw open had 2 if not 3 of them.
