I take it that this rumor was absolute trash? Haven't heard anything about it but then again I'm not keeping up on the European card market news.....

I would welcome back Panini. They had some nice products in 2013-14. National Treasure was great!
My favorite years in the hobby are from the 2001 to 2004, when ITG, UD, Pacific, Fleer and Topps had the licence.

If there's any truth to it, expect a real update about this time next year (or later). Maybe there will be more coming form the rumor mill.... but since UD has an exclusive through the end of 2018-19 season, I can't imagine you'd hear much before then.
Don't worry about the European card market news though, if you're looking for updates I would think stick to North America. I would imagine if Panini does jump back in they'll keep all their NHL business under their North American Subsidiary: Panini America.
