Coworker noticed I collect hockey cards...

So a coworker of mine figured out I collect hockey cards when he came by my desk and noticed some cards sitting there. To shorten a longer story, he let me know that he used to collect a long time ago and brought in one of his binders. In it was this beauty...holy crap!! The pics are a little crappy since I didn't want to touch the thing by taking it out of the binder sheet but holy crap, what a nice copy of this super-grail of a hockey card!! He told me he bought this set when it was new and these cards have been sitting in binders ever since they were opened from the packs.

I'm not a vintage expert by any means but I was under the impression that a huge % of older OPC cards had such edges even right out of a pack due to the lower-precision cutting process of the day. This came up when I was looking at some graded versions that were graded really high but with poor edges and the conversation at the time was that due to it being considered part of the production process of the time, it was factored into the grade assigned.

Great looking card! Nice story, too. Did you tell him to get it graded or at least put it in a one touch case?

And does he have any Jhonas Enroth cards tucked away in that binder of his ;)............... I kid, I kid!

I tried convincing him to get it graded but he doesn't want to send it off anywhere now that he has a sense of potential value. I've got him convinced though that handing it over to a grading company at an expo in toronto (we live 2 hours drive west of toronto) might be a good idea since it requires no mailing

You know, I could totally see that. I don't have any super cards like the one posted above, but if I did, while grading would be option #1, there would be those thoughts in my brain telling me that once I mail it out I would never see it again, haha. But I'm hoping he can get it graded and go from there. Whether he keeps it or sells it, best of luck to him!

Edges are rough for sure, but that's typical. The centering is really nice though.... And i dont see any major flaws on the corners or surface.

The edges probably mean it's not a really high grade, but i bet he'd get something in the mid range. Looks better than my PSA 5, but i don't think its as nice as the 8s i looked at.

Cool story. I can't believe people are sitting on THAT card and dont know it's worth something. The rest of your 80s and 90s cards? Sure, i can see why people would assume its all junk... But that Gretzky is basically a piece of Canadian history now.
