John Elway says the Broncos offered Colin Kaepernick a contract but he passed on it

Elway, who is serving as Denver’s president of football operations and general manager, was recently asked if he might give Kaepernick a look-see as the team searches for a new backup quarterback, but Elway nixed the idea, ESPN reported.

The Broncos recently demoted Paxton Lynch to No. 3 to give second-year quarterback Chad Kelly a shot at the second spot. But the team is not ruling out the possibility of bringing on another quarterback. With that in mind, Elway was asked about the possibility of signing Kaepernick.

“You know what, and I said this a while ago: Colin had his chance to be here. We offered him a contract. He didn’t take it,” Elway told reporters. “As I said in my deposition … he’s had his chance to be here. He passed it.”

Elway was referring to the deposition he gave in May in the case Kaepernick brought against the NFL alleging that the league, the owners, and coaches have “colluded” to keep him from pursuing his football career.

Elway reportedly met with Kaepernick twice in 2016 trying to work out a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for the quarterback, but the offer would have trimmed his salary by several million per year.

To add some context to what Elway recently said:

1. The contract would have paid Kaepernick $14 million for 2 years. This is while he was going into the 3rd year of a 6 year contract that was worth up to $126 million. Quite the paycut for a guy who would have been the starting QB of a team coming off of a Super Bowl win and a guy who led a team to a Super Bowl.

2. Elway made the offer in April of 2016, before Kaepernick got involved with protesting during the National Anthem. Kaepernick's case is that there is collusion against him due to his protesting. Thus Elway is coming off as quite disingenuous.

This is a sportscardforum. It would be nice to discuss sports card stuff here and not political agendas/opinions. Elway didn't state anything that wasn't absolutely true ?(if you listened to his testimony).

Try to think about it as an owner of a business: You have a potential employee who has performance that is declining and has taken a very controversial stance in which many of your customers do not share. From a pure business perspective, it doesn't make sense to hire that individual.

Furthermore, more players have hopped on the protest bandwagon which has led to decline in viewership, which equals revenues. And the protest is accomplishing absolutely nothing but gaining negative attention. There are other platforms they can use. It is amazing how we don't hear about any actions that they are actually accomplishing during the offseason to really make a difference. Is racial inequality only important during football season?

When this is all said and done, the NFL will cease to exist and we will have Colin to thank. His actions accomplish nothing but decrease revenue for owners. Players want more expensive contracts that eventually these owners are not going to be able to pay because the percentage of decreasing revenue is shocking. This is happening because people want to watch sports and not have individuals political agendas (many who do not agree) forced in their face. Especially when they are paying big bucks!! I know the players believe in their cause but they are screwing themselves and potential future players. Don't see this happening in other sports because they understand the implications. Use another platform to bring attention and actually take actions to make a difference instead of taking divisive actions that make no difference. Unfortunately, I believe it is too late.

Other sports revenues are increasing while NFL's $$$ are decreasing because people are going elsewhere. Believe what you want, but look at the facts and the numbers!
