The fact that the Leafs didn't have to part with top defensive prospects Rasmus Sandin or Timothy Liljegren, or players from their NHL roster, is incredible to me.

I'm beginning to think that Kyle Dubas is actually a real-world Harry Potter, because that was some magic.

I was critical of the Leafs last season, because they didn't do something like this. I really believed that the group of forwards they had last season was the most talented we would see. It was clear they'd let Bozak & JVR walk... why not go for it, before you get weaker?

Then they prove me wrong, and make the forward corps even better this season.

The looming cap crunch does mean that they (most likely) will never be as deep up front as they are this year (and maybe not even on the backend?). I still have a hard time seeing a team that has won zero playoff rounds winning a cup.... but this is the kind of move they needed to make, to have a better shot at it.

They got a guy who is now their #2 dman, and it cost them some magic beans. Really well done, IMO.
