Question about 1999 Topps Gold Label

My question is about the series numbering on the back of the 1999 Topps Gold Label cards. The "Red Label" versions.

They guy is calling it an error due to the lack of foil on the serial number.

My question is, is that true?

I have two red label cards from that set. A Troy Aikman /100 and a Rod Smith /25. Both have the same condition. Neither one has foil in the serial number. They are embossed, rather than printed.

I remember puling the Aikman while on a trip to California from a Target, and wondering about it then, and asking my LCS dealer about when I bought the R. Smith. At the time, we thought that was just a new thing Topps was doing to be different. Just embossing the numbers without using foil.

Anyway, anyone out there with numbered 1999 Topps Gold? Are yours stamped without foil also? Or are these truly some kind of error, with most of the numbered cards from that set having printed, as well as embossed numbers?

These are my only cards with this kind of numbering, and I am just wondering if this is an error, like the 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship versions that aren't numbered (clear error cards), or is this the way these cards are supposed to be?

I think that the embossing is correct, and this isn't any error. But I don't KNOW that as fact. Any help is appreciated.

I can CONFIRM that these are NOT error cards. For whatever reason, Topps did not put any coloring/ink in the sequence #s of the 1999 football set and the 1998-99 hockey set (not sure what happened with baseball & basketball). I have completed the class 1 RED 1998-99 hockey set and I am 6 cards away from the 1999 class 1 red set, NONE of the cards have any coloring in the sequene #s.

That pretty much confirms my thoughts on this. That these are not errors.

Probably just trying something different, or maybe just saving money on the foil that we normally see.

Not the first time Topps has used a different style for their numbering. I have a Bowman 2000 Mike Anderson that has a little tiny black numbering on the bottom that's actually pretty hard to see.
