Look, this is just my opinion but WHY AHL? and SPGU none the less? oh right, Leaf/ITG has the rights to the junior clubs...
I mean is an AHL card considered an actual "rookie" probably not - not to mention most of the guys you want (top picks) go straight to the NHL or jump the AHL entirely.... I mean they would have to load that set up with AHL legends that went on to be NHL superstars "true base cards", patches, autos and everything else SPGU has in their NHL product for me to even take a look...
This really shows how inept UD actually is.... They don't even understand that top picks generally will get their 9 games, if they don't, make the club they will get sent back to junior club and the following year they will absolutely make the team - sure they may be sent down to the AHL at some point if they're not playing well or because the GM needs to make some moves and RFA's can't be claimed on waivers so they're "useful" in a crafty sense....But even then top picks will have NHL cards if they play a game in the NHL in their draft year.... Heck the top 10 picks get their NHL YG's immediately...
So what is the point of AHL SPGU? .. You won't get anything good beyond perhaps some awesome patches from some players that have perhaps 3rd line potential - and even then it's an AHL patch... I suppose you would really have to be an AHL fan to buy this product.... I mean I understand the regular UD AHL cards - ok fine - you can get some cool autos but AHL SPGU makes absolutely no sense whatsoever...
I mean if they could find a way to get the rights to produce WHA cards, with vintage GU jerseys/patches and autos and such, now that would be a different story - I would be all over that product...
UD SPGU WHA/AHL - now that would be cool. However the only NHL card manufactures that would consider such a concept is Leaf/ITGU.... But getting vintage GU Jersey/patch, auto legends from the WHA would really be a cool product.. Perhaps have an AHL base set and a WHA SP high number set?.. They could even sneak Gretzky in there with the WHA Racers or the Oilers.. Marc Tardif, Real Cloutier, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Jacques Plante, Bernie Parent etc - a lot of stars with impressive stats played in the WHA and had or went on to have impressive careers... And make them SP's or even "true base cards" as in the card is serial numbered to the players jersey.... That would absolutely be a product I would buy, and I'm sure many collectors would too...
TBH, IMO - the only reason why UD is going with these AHL cards is to further their exclusive rights with NHL teams in an attempt to make a good impression by tossing more money at the franchises - It's essentially a bribe.
I mean I'm not buying AHL cards, SPGU or UD period! .... I mean name the last star player that spent an entire year in the AHL before they went on to be an NHL star? if I cant name one you can't, lol...
But if UD wanted to mix it up a bit and have an AHL/WHA set with AHL being low numbers and WHA being SP high number, auto's or jerseys/patches and then have "true base cards" - I would buy the heck out of that product... But like I said - only Leaf/ITGU would pursue such a project.... UD has no reason to please hockey fans because they have a monopoly.
Anyway, just my .02 cents on how UD could perhaps make a cool product while still promoting the AHL and AHL players.Last edited by Savard18; 07-18-2020 at 05:22 AM.

Great opportunity for collectors to get some sweet Lafreniere pieces, especially since his NHL Debut won't be for awhile!

Upper Deck owns the rights to everything hockey related... If I were the president of Leaf/In The Game I would double down and do whatever is needed to get the exclusive TM rights to all 31 I suppse 32 teams...
I personally could destroy UD just with just photoshop... There are a lot of talented artists out there that are hockey fans too that could come up with some real cool product...
I cant stand Upper Deck for numerous reasons... I mean I don't even collect basketball but I have basketball cards and some of their card designs are beautiful.. Of course Upper Deck doesn't give a crap anymore because they don't need to and they're comfortable in their cozy position..... Wow another Portrait, WOW another Shining Stars, WOW an Exclusive that looks exactly like the base card but says "Exclusives" on it and it's S/N'ed to 100.... So fun!!!

Don't hold your breath waiting for Leaf to get a licence in hockey, or any sport for that matter.

Dude, with goalies that's like saying "Jim Carey" 25 years ago..
Besides, goaltending is such an unusually hard position to predict on how good they will be... I mean every goalie is going to go through the AHL because goalies develop and a much different pace than a skater. I mean if you're a goalie in the present that is still a prospect you're not going to see NHL time beyond an emergency backup position or at the end of the season when your team is out of it and even in those circumstance the goalie usually gets shelled...
Goalies generally don't make it to the NHL until they]re 23-25, the best are great for 10-15 years if given the opportunity to play in their early 20's (20-23 which is rare and then they're done...... But as they say (as a former goalie myself) - they're crazy and they'll eat rubber for 7 years in different minor league systems until they step foot on NHL ice in a real NHL game... That's true goalies are crazy - well not crazy just dedicated and highly focused... They play for the love of their position and the game but mostly the position..

I think they can... They just have to bid for the rights and if they lose then file an anti-trust lawsuit against Upper Deck declaring them a monopoly...
If I was the president of Leaf/ITG I would do just that...
And I know a bit about litigation, ITG would win for numerous reasons... One could argue that there is collusion with UD...
