Yeah easier said than done I will say. Drafting forwards is hit and miss never mind predicting which 18 yr will grow into an elite D-man is near impossible.
A elite D-man will make life so much easier for his forwards, and a nightmare for the other teams. Pronger was the whole package but he was also mean as heck! A once in a decade type player for sure.

Two more (related thoughts).
Lots of us area old enough to remember that 2006 run to the finals, where they were a game away from winning the Stanley Cup (if Dwayne Roloson hadn't gotten hurt, I still believe they would have won). The team got BAD very quickly after that.
The 2009-10 Oilers were awful. That earned them their first 1st overall pick in 2010 (Taylor Hall).
Comparing rosters: Dustin Penner & Sam Gagner were the leading scorers on that 09-10 team. Clearly those two are not even close to McDavid & Draistil...... but I'm not so sure that the rest of today's roster (players 3-20) are any better than they were in 2009-10.
Also, thinking about 2017 edition of the Oilers. A team that made the playoffs, and won in the 1st round. Optimism was high with most fans after that season. You could see that the team was getting better, and everyone thought they were close to contending.
Since then? There are only 7 players from that 2017 club that are still with the Oilers today (McDavid, Draistil, Pulljarvi, Hopkins, Nurse, Kassian, Russell). Russell barely counts, as he's a part time player. The roster has been turned over quite a bit in the 5 years since, but clearly it hasn't been improved. That isn't all on Ken Hollard (he's only been around since the spring of 2019) but it's not like the Oilers are suffering because they're stuck with the same group over and over again.

Geez, they went from what i thought to be a cup contender, to possibly not making the playoffs. Still a ways to go, but not trending the
right way. Fans must be very disappointed.

They are awful right now. A team with no confidence. If they don't deal for a new goalie soon, the season is going to be lost.
They should be challenging for the division crown. That's not going to happen anymore.
Fortunate thing for the Oilers is that they're in the weakest division in the league.... if they can turn things around, I think everyone but Vegas is catchable still.

9-1 to start off the season, and then were 16-5 on December 1st.
They've gone 2-11-2 since then.

Fire the coach! and hope the new coach is also an adequate goal tender.
