They can't blame it on the coaching anymore...

Oilers fire head coach Jay Woodcroft, hire Hartford's Kris Knoblauch (sportsnet.ca)

The Edmonton Oilers have fired head coach Jay Woodcroft and assistant coach Dave Manson after a disappointing start to a season that had Stanley Cup aspirations. The team announced that Hartford Wolf Pack's Kris Knoblauch will assume head coaching duties in Woodcroft's place. He will be joined by assistant coach Paul Coffey.

I suspect that the decision had to have been made after the Sharks game. They just needed to get the replacement lined up.

It's a tough tough spot to make the move in-season like this. You can't fire the players of course. It will be interesting to see how the team responds to this. They'll likely come out flying in their next game to make a good first impression.

It's not too late to right the ship, but they've done themselves no favours early.

It might take them awhile to recover from the 8-1 beating the Canucks gave them. Canucks also beat them another 2 times!

When the 'Insiders' all announced on Friday that "Woodcroft would be the coach at least through Saturday" I figured the deal was done and he was a dead man walking Of course. The worst is during the presser and Holland talking about how the players couldn't be held accountable by the coach. The reality is that with how hamstrung they are with their roster because of cap issues, that is more a GM failing than the coach. Of course that leaves the new guy in the same leaky boat. Hopefully they come out of whatever funk they are in, but I'm thinking McDavid is hurt and is playing to try and make up for the rest of the team.

Woodcroft is out, Knoblauch in. McDavid & Browns coach in Erie.

Oilers need to make some changes. 2 or 3 players cannot win you a Cup. Good D wins Cups!! They're Defense is atrocious!! Both Nurse & Bouchard, your top 2 D Men are overrated and horrible in they're own zones. It's gonna be a long season in Edmonton this year. I believe McDavid has 2 more years on his existing contract, enjoy them 2 years before he is gone.

Agreed. If I was McDavid and Draisitl, I'd want out of that ™™™™ show ASAP.

There is no way they can win anything in Edmonton, and they'll never play any meaningful playoff games there. Bottom Line: if you were looking at an ex Leafs goalie (Campbell) as your savior, boy, you have problems.

Mcdavid, I'm sad to say as an Oiler fan, is highly overrated. He's less Wayne Gretzky and more Marcel Dionne, a guy who can put up fancy numbers but can't lead a team to a championship.

That Coach who took the blame & the axe had just under a .650 win percentage....
Sadly the Oilers are just like my Leafs, too much money up front & not enough spent on the back end. Once in a while an offensive heavy team will win the Cup but for the most part over the last 20 years it's been teams built from the goalie on out. Some teams just don't get it!!
