We Have Another Trade To Announce!

Canucks trade captain Hughes to Wild for Rossi, Ohgren, Buium, and first-round pick

The Vancouver Canucks have traded captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for centre Marco Rossi, winger Liam Ohgren, defenceman Zeev Buium, and a 2026 first-round pick.Dreger adds that the Canucks have known for a while that Hughes would not be signing an extension with the club following the expiration of his deal after next season. The New Jersey Devils, where Hughes’ brothers Jack and Luke play, were given a chance to make a deal, as were other teams in the Eastern Conference. Wild general manager Bill Guerin engaged the Canucks a week ago and closed the deal...

Every player and pick involved is a first rounder. If the Oilers had waited a few more hours to make their announcement, nobody would have known Jarry and Skinner had been traded until their first starts. Interesting that not just New Jersey was involved in the discussions with the Flyers having made an attempt as well.

This wasn't entirely unexpected but still....wow. Canucks have traded away their current best player and arguably one of their top-three all-time players. Many sports merchandise & memorabilia stores here in BC are going to have a lot of sales this weekend, and others are going to have to revamp their front-facing wraps, etc. Hughes was the face of the franchise. When I was at the game in October, he's so noticeable out there, just a force. I hope the young players the Canucks get out of the trade turn out to be decent players because otherwise this organization is in for some really rough times.

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

    DON

Don is bang on here. Apparently Hughes informed management over US Thanksgiving he was not going to sign an extension this upcoming off season, preferring to go into his last season on the last year of the current deal only. I don't think the Canucks had an options other than to trade him. and getting 3 former first rounders, all 24 or younger(9th-Rossi 2020, 19th-Öhgren 2022, 12th-Buium 2024,) and the 2026 1st is a pretty good haul.

The Devils couldn't clear enough space under their current contract structure to make the deal work. I don't think the Canucks could afford to go into next season and end up in a Marner situation where Hughes could walk into free agency. Fortunately the Canucks didn't have to worry about a NMC/NTC, but the closer they got to next season's trade deadline they would be looking at diminishing returns on any package coming back.

This is an amazing trade! It's a big trade. It's a big deal. Looking forward to watching it play out the rest of the season for these two teams.

Good job to Vancouver for getting such a great return. They would have been losing Hughes eventually so to get such a high yield in return is great to see. Kudos to Minnesota for pulling the trigger on this one. In New Jersey I Suppose it would be a dream to have all these Hughes brothers on the same team.
