Need Advice re: Best Brands
Hello,
I'm a newbie here, and also an ex-pat Canadian, living in beautiful Savannah, Georgia. Being Canadian, my card collecting interests slanted heavily toward hockey cards. I am also embarrassed to say that I know squat about NFL Football. I know, how do I survive here in football country? My wife is no help...doesn't like ANY sports.
There is a great kid living next door who collects football cards. I want to surprise him once in a while with a few paks here and there. Since I don't know the territory, I humbly seek your advice on what brands are best.
With hockey cards it was Upper Deck, but what is the go-to brand for football cards?
I appreciate your feedback.
Cheers,
Mike

Bowman (Chrome)
Upper Deck
Topps
I usually look for the quality look of the card and the inserts. Like, I'll look on the back of the pack to see what is offered. If I like the sound of what is possible in that series, then I'll start collecting them. Like Bowman Chrome, I like the inserts.

gamesnacks,
Thank you for the advice...Bowman (Chrome), Upper Deck, and Topps it is.
#1BillsFan,
That's a joke, right???
Ummm! I'm on a pension, and he is a kid. $550 and $350 per pack is crawling way past my speed. The former Governor of New York probably paid that much for condoms, but I would want dinner and a movie before getting molested by paying even $350 per pack.
Cheers,
Mike

No, the price was right for those packs. If you want to get him something cool, go with Topps Draft Picks and Prospects. They always have a nice product. Should be coming out soon. You could always look at the pack sales here. Hobby packs available at a great price.

If I was going for any football product it would have to be either Donruss, Leaf or Playoff!! Personally I have no interest in collecting football cards produced by any other company, and feel DLP always offers good stuff!

Sure, no problem. I say start out with what you like. You kinda gotta stay up on it, finding out what is coming out and stuff. I think it isn't a bad idea to go to a card shop and check out which hobby boxes they have and see which ones you like. Once again, for me, I look at inserts mostly. I like to see what is potentially in a pack or box and just go for it. Also, if you are interested in particular players, that helps, 'cause you can just look for them and hope to get their cards while being able to trade or sell everything else you get.
Retail is OK, sometimes, like Target, Wal-Mart and other stores like that. I say sometimes because they really sell mostly the basic boxes that may not have the higher-end cards, but you can find some good stuff there too. Like Bowman Chrome, Topps, and for basketball, Artifacts.
If you have a local card shop though, I'd check that out too. It won't take you long to get back into it. You'll get the feel for what yields or can yield nice stuff real quick.
I don't know if anyone else does it, but with any card pack, be it Garbage Pail Kids, Wacky Packages, Star Wars or Upper Deck NBA, I always look at the box and back of the card to see what the inserts are. If the set is just basics, I usually, almost never, even bother. If I like the way the card is made, the type of photos and stuff, then I might pick up a pack just to check it out.
