The LAST WORD on the Patriots taping the Rams

    Apology
    Wednesday, May 14, 2008

On Feb. 2, 2008, the Boston Herald reported that a member of the New England Patriots video staff taped the St. Louis Rams’ walkthrough on the day before Super Bowl XXXVI. While the Boston Herald based its Feb. 2, 2008, report on sources that it believed to be credible, we now know that this report was false, and that no tape of the walkthrough ever existed.

Prior to the publication of its Feb. 2, 2008, article, the Boston Herald neither possessed nor viewed a tape of the Rams’ walkthrough before Super Bowl XXXVI, nor did we speak to anyone who had. We should not have published the allegation in the absence of firmer verification.

The Boston Herald regrets the damage done to the team by publication of the allegation, and sincerely apologizes to its readers and to the New England Patriots owners, players, employees and fans for our error.

it can't be proven that this didn't occur, and it seems to be something they would do. they just can't provide a tape, doesn't prove anything either way.

Prior to the publication of its Feb. 2, 2008, article, the Boston Herald neither possessed nor viewed a tape of the Rams’ walkthrough before Super Bowl XXXVI, nor did we speak to anyone who had. We should not have published the allegation in the absence of firmer verification.

why would this story be published if they weren't told something? was the whole thing just made up. it is common knowledge the pats tape things.

The Boston Herald regrets the damage done to the team by publication of the allegation, and sincerely apologizes to its readers and to the New England Patriots owners, players, employees and fans for our error.

i hardly think the publication of this story did any more harm to the patriots than the patriots already did to themselves.

conclusion--they tape things and cheat, whats to apologise for?

This was the "smoking gun," and now this tabloid rag has come out and admitted it was made up. This was the source on every story on ESPN, FOX SPORTS & every other network.
Think about how many hours of network coverage were devoted to this "story" the day before the super bowl. All those reports were based on this article, now, months later, we find out it was made up. Incredible.

matt_curren - as a person I've traded my Patriots cards to before, I am still awaiting your apology on behalf of your team for cheating in the AFC championship game against my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers (a true dynasty team)

Also, it's funny how Patriots fans are sincerely hoping that this will either "just go away" or clinging to the idea that the Rams walk through is somehow the "smoking gun"...And why is stealing hand signals "OK" and "every team does it" and "didn't have any impact on the game"

How about Matt Walsh actually was present at the Rams walk-through AND SHARED what he observed with a Patriots Assistant coach? How about Bill Belicheat claimed he didn't know he was breaking any rules, yet Matt Walsh felt as if he shouldn't get caught...

Let's just face it...this apology really means nothing!

Actually, months later, we find out there's this guy named Matt Walsh who actually has video proof that Belicheat has been doing this since 2000...

I agree with you guys - I want Specter to blow this whole thing open. I hope he does create a waste-of-time Senate hearing so we can find out EXACTLY how many teams have been doing this. Just one example - did you guys catch that Walsh said that he saw the Jets spying on the patriots while he was taping too? Because he did... is there any outrage on that? (As a pats fine I don't care)

Many prominent players & coaches have come out and said that this taping stuff happened all over the NFL. Yes the pats were stupid to get caught but they paid a huge fine and lost a first rounder. It seems like the punishment fit the crime. Clearly the rules on taping were not enforced much until this year. It also seems as if the rules were vague about what could be taped and when and where...until now of course. Now the rules are very clear, as they should be. In terms of an apology, that's not going to happen. Let's talk about teams breaking the rules....

Like the Steelers Violating the salary cap:
    http://www.post-gazette.com/steelers...823salary2.asp

or the Steelers sticking with grass to help the running game
(& growing it too long to slow down other teams)

    http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/23118595/

or the Steelers GROUNDBREAKING USE OF STEROIDS back in the "glory days"
    http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/c...ebig0130p1.asp

Give me a Break - the patriots got caught breaking the rules and paid a fine and lost a draft pick. The 49ers violated the salary cap like crazy in the 90's.. The Broncos were FINED almost million bucks in the late 90's for the same thing. *(yes they were the same years they won the super bowls)

& GUESS WHAT --- NOBODY NEEDS TO APOLOGISE FOR ANY OF THAT!!!

the fine and lost draft pick is nowhere close to what should have been done. i suggest losing the lombardi trophies.

the patriot fans are saying look at everybody else, instead of looking at the log in their own eyes. what happened to just keep hating and we'll keep winning, and wait till next year?

As far as I'm concerned Spygate is over - the fines have been paid and the draft picks are gone. No apologies needed.
It is over... however IF it cannot go away and we are going to drag out because of a senator with a huge conflict of interest and too much time on his hands then I guess I'd like to see just how many teams were taping on the sidelines in the wrong place as well.

Bearfield if it turns out the Bills were taping from the wrong spot on the field as well - would you really care?

he he, the bills record proves that they didn't tape anything. the other thing is that the bills organization isn't smart enough to even think of it. and they have no trophies to return.
bottem line, the patriots were not honest. and as much as you try to say everybody else did it, prove it. and the fact that the patriots have been doing it since 2000 and probably before means that there have been a lot more tapes that have been destroyed, lost, or misplaced.
