I really do not like 'Ebay value' at all. Too many people try to use that to get more for their cards or pay less for cards others are selling. Search for any cards on Ebay, and they dont all sell for the same amount. Tons of factors effect how little or how much a cards goes for on Ebay. I could look up a card and find the one that sold for the least or the most, depending on whether I'm in a buying or selling postion, and use that as my 'Ebay value' for the card. Ebay value could range hundreds of dollars depending on the card. For me, a standard like Beckett is the only way to go.

Some very good points were brought up in this thread. I do believe a card is worth only what someone will pay for it and I also agree people flip flop between prices. Obviously there is more than one way to gauge value for a card and it would be best to factor in all sources, such as beckett AND ebay, to find the value of a card. Maybe I'm just clinging to the past when everyone carried a beckett around and it was the card bible. "The times they are a changin'....."

The key, I believe, is consistency. If you are going to trade by beckett, only trade by beckett, dont mix and match the two when it benefits you, but not when it would help another trader. Same thing with ebay sell value. If you try to use ebay values to get a card that you want, dont try and then use beckett value on your cards to make sure you get the better end of the deal, or rip off the guy you are trading with. Both are valid ways to judge value, but it must be fair and consistent, not picking and choosing which value will help you the most that particular trade

I know what you mean. Its at the point where price guides are more like trading guides. You hardly ever see cards sell for their BV unless they have Jordanish talent. Even then its still rare. Its hard to know exactly what cards will sell for, which is why there is ebay. Its understandable when people go by their prices, although say my Jordan RC sold for $300, and yet another one sold for $200, of course if your selling by ebay prices people are gonna expect to pay the absoulte lowest price they can find. Where as the seller on the site will search completed auctions for the absoulte highest they can find. I've been here for years and one thing i've realized is that it is next to impossible to sell cards on this site, which gets to the point where this IS more of a trading site. I've learned that if I need some quick cash, ebay is the way to go for selling.

People are always complainig about the same thing every single day. If you don't like the price or the deal, just don't do it. If I want a card I'll paid a fairly decent price. I know who to deal with, not everybody on this site will give u a good deal.

the point is, how can people expect to get lower than ebay here? its insulting, because for all we know, the person could go and put it on ebay and rip the person off. i don't use ebay for a reference, and i dont go lower than ebay. i do what i think is a fair price and more people should do that. the reason so many people are ranting, is because alot of newbies are lowballing everyone. ive seen more $10 dollar gu's offered for highend, and 50bv cards get a $5 dollar offer lately than i ever had.
heck i saw somone who offered 50 dollars for over 600bv worth of cards (im not kidding. i can show the link)
it was a 6 piece gu with ted williams, clemente, etc. the old hofers. people are now expecting to get less than ebay and they shouldnt, because more people will just sell it on ebay.
something else that bothers me is seeing a thread for selling to pay ebay debts. if you dont have the money, dont bid. if you come here being desperate for money, thats like opening yourself to get lowballing offers like crazy. and people are putting up thread titles like "free cards" or "^$^&^%&*((*&^%$%^&" just to get attention. there is no need for itHidden Content

Hey bowler I know what you mean. That is what I say to deal with people you know they won't try to rip you off. There are a lot of people here that sells their stuff for a decent price.
About the making money to pay for ebay fees, I bet you sometimes it is a lie. They use it to make it easy to sell.

some people really do have fee's i think to pay. i would assume, since there desperate they would take lower (a general thinking) than if they werent so desperate. i dont sell much lately, because of the "i can get it cheaper on ebay" and "i want lower than ebay" if i sell, i'll just take some fee's and get what i should for the items

When valuing a card for a trade/sell, I think the smartest thing to do is use both SV and BV. We forget that BV is established from SV. It tends to be too high, but the HI column is the mainstream retail price that you find at a top-dollar store and the LO side tends to be pretty close to SV.
I use BV almost all the time, but when it comes to a player like David Price or Josh Hamilton, who has recently turned heads, I will in both sides of trading, use SV since the BV is bound to go up.
