Forgetting "Mellow", "Rave" and "Jump Style"? :)
I lived in the Netherlands for 34 years and experienced the whole start of the Techno genre. It's still very popular over there.
If you want to get an idea what hardcore techno or jump style includes just go to Youtube and search for Scooter. His songs "One (Always Hardcore)" and "What is the question" will give you an idea. You will find that the synthesizer beats are intermingled with modified tunes that sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks.
From the beginning, a lot of techno and house tunes had a female singer next to computer generated beats generated by a DJ.
The songs they sang were almost always remakes of popular, easy listening songs.
If you want to get an idea what trance includes, search for "White Sensation" on Youtube. "White Sensations" are parties organized all over Europe and they are HUGE! Just look at a few and you will get an idea!!! LOL
Performing at these parties are the most famous DJ's in this genre like Armin Van Buren, DJ Tiesto etc.
Biggest techno hits are probably "Sandstorm" by Darude (all synthesizer), "I'm Blue" by Eiffel 65, etc.
Almost all techno is dance based and popular with the club hopping crowd. Just compare all the styles with all the styles in country like bluegrass, contemporary etc.
Hope this helps a bit! LOL

Nope didn't forget them, just didn't want the list to grow beyond comprehension because there are so many more styles out there. I don't think Mellow and Jump style techno is real popular stateside as much as in say The Netherland's or Europe, where as Breakbeat, Jungle and House music are more popular here.
For the OP if you want examples of some of the styles I listed check out DJ's like DJ Icey, Baby Anne, DJ Huda Hudia,Tony Faline, DJ Fixx, Goldie, Tiesto, Van Buuren, Van Dyk and Oakenfold.

As a fan of the genre, I wouldn't consider all of those subsets TRUE techno.
~Dave
Edit: hendrikus... I hope you aren't suggesting that techno started in the netherlands...

Each music Genre has sub-genre's and IMO no "True" style of techno exsists. The style of Techno played in clubs is usually based on where you live. I wouldn't be able to go to a club here in Florida and hear much Trance because most of your DJ's here are spinning Florida Break Beat, likewise I would be able to go to a club in Amsterdam and hear a lot of Florida Break Beat because Trance and Progressive is very popular over there.

Started in Western Europe in the 1970s :)
Found a little bit for my paper. The library here has nothing.. trying to get a book that *might* have something in it from another library. Grr.
